NY Times also has an article but might be behind a pay wall for some. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/07/20/nyregion/laguardia-airport-train.html

Good luck on a crowded 7 train to get there.
For the LIRR from Penn, are they increasing frequency?
And dedicating trains to only do the Penn/Willets Point return trip?

It's equally as convoluted as the Newark airtrain. That doesn't run to Penn Station Newark (why not?)...and so after catching the Path... you are forced to take a NJ train one stop and then transfer to the airtrain. 3 different trains to get to Newark Airport from Manhattan.

$2 billion dollars?!  I gotta believe that money could be better spent on something more important.

Why would you take Path to Newark instead of just taking an NJ Transit train from Penn Station to the Newark Airport Stop? Unless you mean if you are in lower Manhattan where the path is closer?

Yes...the three trains to Newark Airport is really from Brooklyn/Downtown Manhattan.

Thinking more about this airtrain to LGA...I suppose the idea isn't so terrible.
LIRR train from Penn or Grand Central to Willets Pt...might take a shorter time for Manhattan folks. And that is who it is being built for.

The trick would be to avoid the 7 train if possible to get to LGA and back to Manhattan.

How often do LIRR trains run? I imagine that might be the deciding factor whether someone hops on an LIRR train vs a 7 train, which come every few minutes. Although, if you have to wait 15 minutes for an LIRR and taking it shaves 15 minutes off the trip to Willets from Manhattan (vs. 7 train) then you're breaking even.

My guess...if they are smart...the MTA will run special dedicated trains to and from Willet's Pt from Manhattan.

My reading about the World's Fair 1964...suggests they did that in those days. I believe that's when the Willet's Pt station was built.

I just checked. Willet's Point station was built for the 1939 World's Fair. Not 1964.

sadly, that makes it pretty "new" in terms of the overall system.

I think the unspoken reality is that this is actually a parking shuttle for employees or people driving in from Long Island.  That's why Cuomo and others never really cared that it makes no sense for getting to Manhattan.

Well it definitely benefits the Long Island folks and the Manhattanites far more than Jackson Heights.

The Q70 bus already works like a charm for Jackson Heights folks to get to LGA.

I wonder if they will continue to fund/offer the Q70 after the Airtrain is up and running.

I doubt the Q70 would run once the air train is built.
The MTA would funnel everyone to the air train.

So in truth the air train will make it far more difficult and complicated for Jackson Hts folks.
