Incorrect Google maps transit directions
« on: May 13, 2018, 06:42:19 PM »
Is anyone else having trouble with Google maps transit directions?

This morning I Google mapped directions for a location on the UWS, near 96th and Amsterdam. It came back with the most convoluted instructions, with the top one being traveling on the 6 train to the Upper East Side and then taking a bus across the park, and a lot of  walking. I had even selected a preference of subways only and it still gave me a mess of bus directions with a route that included more than 20 minutes of walking. (I ended up taking the R train to the 2 train.)

Another time recently, it showed the E and the F trains both running along the same track and suggested taking the E train to 42nd St. Bryant Park, where it doesn't actually go.

Also, I just wanted to mention that another time when it gave me strange directions, I reported it to Google, but never heard anything back. I checked the same directions again a week later and nothing had changed, so that didn't encourage me to report further problems.

Yes, I've had similarly circuitous routes suggested at times.

I do so miss hop-stop!

I miss hop-stop too! Apple bought it and destroyed it.

My go to app has been citymapper which is just as reliable and accurate as hopstop was. Google maps has led me astray before as well.

Yes, seconding the recommendation for CityMapper. https://citymapper.com/nyc

Google Maps sometimes comes up with truly crazy routes; CityMapper has not led me astray. (Sometimes when it recommends routes that seem odd to me, it's actually to avoid some sort of delay or shutdown.)

If you're not driving, why not use the MTA tripbuilder?

Feasible but less versatile - "no stop within walking distance of destination" (about a mile)

I use that only after I think Google has given me weird directions. I find MTA trip planner to be accurate but  cumbersome. It's not user friendly.

But maybe I will switch to citymapper and see how that turns out.
