Anyone have any interesting sites/blogs to share?
« on: April 16, 2008, 11:09:08 PM »
I noticed a listing of some notable websites in a recent issue of Time magazine, and it gave me the idea for starting this thread.  I'm always looking for some interesting sites, so I thought it would be great to share some of our finds here.

Here's the listing from Time:

www.HuffingtonPost.com
www.LifeHacker.com
www.Metafilter.com
www.TreeHugger.com
www.PostSecret.com

I've visited the Huffington Post's political page often, and find that my morning cup of caffeine helps me sort through all the postings there!

I'll post a few of my finds shortly.

I like this question.

My favorite sites are always changing.  I used to LOVE The Purse Forum back when I was collecting designer bags.   Mindless shallow obsessing is their motto... and I loved it when I was into it. Bored with it now.

I love cutewithchris.com because his videos and photos and letters from animal lovers crack me up.  He has a running gag on "Crazy Cat Ladies" that always cracks me up.

And Television Without Pity is hysterical and biting in their descriptions of all the popular series.  Even if I watched an episode of some show, I'll read their recap of it just to hear their bitchy comments. Very sarcastic.

And Don't Get Me Started with Linda Sharp.  I tend to like biting humor.
First, do no harm.

Two of my regular go-to sites are

http://www.chowhound.com/boards/19  - for reading about food in the Outer Boroughs
and
www.gothamist.com   - for the latest interesting tidbits about what's going on in NYC.

And for reading reviews about books and products I generally hit up www.amazon.com

I like most sites listing product/service reviews such as:

www.epinions.com
www.cnet.com
www.yelp.com
www.makeupalley.com

Recent blog I've been reading, mostly because I'm a baseball fan:

Curt Schilling's blog www.38pitches.com

Not as in depth as Curt Schilling's site, but somewhat of a guilty pleasure...especially because he's still practically a rookie pitcher and a Yankee!
Phil Hughes' blog http://philhughes.wordpress.com/

The movie fan likes:

www.imdb.com

For cute things, I recently discovered:

www.cuteoverload.com

Does anyone know why Outer B hasn't been updated?  I loved visiting this site and reading up on all the local real estate stories, but the last post is dated January 18th.  I e-mailed Meg, the editor, a while back, but never received a response.

I love the Urban Dictionary - it's my new translator..   I hope this doesn't mean I am getting old.

Here's a cooking website focusing on Indian food.  There are many recipes for traditional favorites, and most dishes seem pretty simple to prepare and are accompanied by how-to videos.

for all you Ikea lovers:

ikeahacker.blogspot.com

It shows new ways to use Ikea products, how people have adapted them, cut,
sewn, turned upside down and reconfigured Ikea products for novel uses.

Interesting ideas at this site.  I disagree with one of the suggested Ikea product ideas though.  In one of the photos, someone is using a kitchen rack of some sort over their toilet to place makeup items, including blush brushes and such.  Call me a germaphobe, but I would be hesitant about swirling that brush on my face after it's been sitting right over a toilet.  I've always read that the flush of a toilet creates a mist that covers surrounding areas.  For that reason, placing toothbrushes and makeup brushes, etc. near a toilet is discouraged.  I hope this person is closing the lid when he/she flushes!  :-\

I read 236.com, a satirical take on the news. I used to also read stuffwhitepeoplelike.com, some posts of which were just recently published in a book.

I'm also addicted to games, so I do freerice.com, scrabulous and a couple of crossword puzzles almost daily.

And then ApartmentTherapy and a couple of food sites.

A friend of mine turned me on to Word Twist and Scrabulous on Facebook.  OMG!  Talk about addicting!  :o

I just came across a food blog that has some nice recipes for traditional Ecuadorian favorites.  Beautiful photos too!  Browsing through the site actually made me feel hungry.
