The opening reception for "The Other Me," an exhibition by Jean Foos, is Tuesday, November 20 from 6 to 9pm.
The images are painterly alterations of found fashion photographs in which models peer through hand-worked grids and loopy meshes.

I didn't even know there was a gallery over there, or really anywhere in the neighborhood.  I'm so wrung out at the end of the day that I don't look around to see what's in my own backyard so to speak.  Unfortunately can't make it over there tonight but if there is some kind of website or mailing list I'd like to know about it. Thanks.

The gallery's website is http://www.ygallerynewyork.com/ and they do have an email mailing list you can get on so that you will know about future events.

They are also open regular hours, and if you don't have to work on weekends you could walk over there on a Saturday afternoon.  Maybe you could combine it with a trip to Despana Brand Foods a few doors down for some gourmet Spanish food products and a free glass of wine.

painting performance at Y Gallery Jan. 25
« Reply #4 on: January 19, 2008, 03:43:43 PM »
From the Y Gallery:

Dear friends,

Come and join us for Jim Avignon's delightful performance art on January 25th, 2007 from 6-9pm

Y  Gallery is pleased to present “i looked in the mirror and i saw a ghost,” an exhibition of paintings, furniture and murals by German Pop artist Jim Avignon. In this exhibition, Avignon has chosen to work with the idea of multiple lives in a fictional world that is threatening to become a “reality.”

Curator Cecilia Jurado says,  “I am fascinated by the amount of time people devote to creating other identities online. Jim’s work addresses this in a playful and sharp commentary.”

Jim Avignon is known for his sense of humor, for instance here he introduces ghosts as the main characters in various quotidian life situations.

We believe this exhibition is pertinent to the context and diversity of Jackson Heights. Individuals from all over the globe coexist in this community where they have few things in common. Integrating into American culture often leads to reassessing one’s self and native culture. This may stimulate individuals to re-evaluate their innate identities, which many artists believe are the results of cultural clashes.

Avignon introduces the general public to art collecting by having his exhibition pieces priced under 200 dollars. He declares it an act of democratic art distribution.

Jim Avignon was born in Munich, Germany. His work has been showcased at Documenta, Kassel; Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona; Museum of Modern Art, in Jyväskylä, Finland, as well as in many galleries around the world. There are also numerous television documentaries about Avignon broadcast on BBC, Arte and DWTV and the 60-minute documentary “die welt des Jim Avignon“. He currently lives and works in New York and Berlin.

I went to this performance and it was fun watching the artist work, but the best part was seeing what he's done with the space for the duration of the show.  He's really turned the gallery into an environment.  Check it out if you have a chance.  Even if you can only walk by when the gallery is closed, you should still be able to get a sense of the show from the sidewalk since the outside wall is entirely glass.

March 21st to April 26th, 2008
Opening reception: Friday, March 21st 6-9pm

Dear friends,

Come and join us for Norma Markley's opening reception of "Half-Wet" Friday, March 21st, 2008 at 6pm.

Y Gallery is pleased to present “Half-Wet,” a room of eclectic works by American artist Norma Markley. She will be presenting works on paper, embroidered towels, neon, and winkies. The underlay of humor and menace is meant to invite audience identification and involvement. The colorful, cut paper collages involve delicate and meticulously detailed handiwork referencing motels and “idiot cartoon voices.”

This project is made possible with funds from the Decentralization Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts, administered by the Queens Council on the Arts.

We look forward to seeing you,

JH artist showing at Y Gallery, opens May 2

Another one of our JH neighbors is having a show at the Y Gallery:

Opening at the Y Gallery on May 2
Paul Dacey  "Made in China”
Curated by Cecilia Jurado
show runs April 30 to May 25th, 2008
Opening reception: Friday, May 2nd 6-9pm

Dear friends,
Come and join us for Paul Daceys' opening reception of "Made in China" Friday, May 2nd, 2008 starting at 6pm.
Y Gallery is pleased to present “Made in China”, an exhibition of prints by New York artist Paul Dacey. This show, which made it’s debut in Beijing in 2006, consists of digitally enhanced, pop-inspired images of a crumpled plastic shopping bag bearing the ever present “MADE IN CHINA” stamp. These works address production and consumption, power, and confrontation.  Dacey manages to make them look luxurious and desirable as they still conserve their physical emptiness.

We look forward to seeing you,
Cecilia Jurado, Tania Mattos and Augusto Yayiko

I bought a piece by Paul Dacey about 3 years ago. His work is original, complex and every day when I see it on the living room wall, I'm glad I made the purchase!

No, I have no stake in the Y Gallery or any other promotional subtext.
