The Jackson Heights Art Club Presents

53rd Annual Members Show

The Jackson Heights Art Club is proud to announce the opening of its 53rd Annual Members Exhibit and Sale on Friday, April 4, 2008, at 7:00 PM in the Parish House of St. Mark's Church, 33-50 82nd Street, Jackson Heights.  The exhibit will also be open from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM on Saturday, April 5, and Sunday, April 6.  The public is invited to attend the reception and the exhibition free of charge.

This year, The Jackson Heights Art Club celebrates 60 years of  bringing art to the Jackson Heights community.  The Club was founded in 1948 when a local artist, Natalie Norris, saw an exhibit by Nassau County artists at the Jackson Theater.  Outraged that the theater displayed work from Nassau County when there were so many talented artists in Jackson Heights, she contacted other local artists and arranged a show at the theater.  This group of 17 formed the nucleus of the organization which was originally called the Twentieth Century Art Association but was soon renamed The Jackson Heights Art Club.

Since its beginning, the Club has been committed to furthering the knowledge and enjoyment of visual arts among the people of Jackson Heights and adjacent communities in western Queens.  The Club operates an art studio and teaching facility which offers classes in all media and presents a year-round calendar of visual arts events including indoor and outdoor art exhibits and painting demonstrations.

The Club's first annual show was held in 1952 in an empty storefront just a few blocks away from where it is located today.  Since then, the Club has had an annual show every year except for a few years early on when exhibit space was not available.

The current members of The Jackson Heights Art Club are pleased to continue the rich tradition, begun by the founding members many years ago, of bringing professional quality art to their neighbors in Jackson Heights. The works of art on display this year represent the finest efforts of the Club's Members and include watercolors, oils, acrylics and pastel.

Activities at The Jackson Heights Art Club are supported in part by grants from Senator John D. Sabini and the New York State Education Department, Assemblyman Ivan C. Lafayette and the New York State Department of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, Mayor Michael Bloomberg and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and Councilmember Helen Sears .
