Is there something wrong with my computer, or is it that nobody knows?

I only know of one person who was able to outbid a foreclosure on the courthouse steps, and that is a sibling of a congressman. IOW, don't waste your time.

Last year or so the banks were allowing 4closures at big auction events. Check the events schedule at Jacob Javits Center.

Here's an FHA website:

some real estate agencies get access to bank foreclosures. it's not an auction, but it's usually a better price than standard. I believe it is called club 21 realty. but I'm looking for others...

club 21 seems legit. but whatever you do, stay away from Playa on roosevelt. my ex and i needed the cops to intervene when one of their reps came to an open house and -- without telling us -- rented our rental unit to four different families, one of which showed up at the door with their possessions.

and no, we hadn't agreed to work with him at all.

Exit realty also seemed a bit shady to us. I can't say we only had one positive experience with a cent. 21 realtor who didn't waste our time showing us roach infested homes with 200 people living in them.

My in-laws first house was a foreclosure home. You just need to know what you're doing. Also, beware the "Bid on the city" sites, most of the properties have minimums etc. It's not an out and out scam, but they don't seem to be as advertised.

I'm not sure about foreclosures but if you're interested in auctions, I'm subscribed to a mailing list here about real estate auctions:

http://www.auction.com/

NYTimes did an article about the company and process here awhile ago:
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/09/nyregion/09foreclosure.html?ref=business

And here's some additional info about REOs, short sales, etc.

Foreclosure sales are conducted at court houses on certain days of the week. If you really wish to find bargain, go to Queens County Supreme Court and ask for their next one and show up for the foreclosure sale.
