10 cool & 10 suck things of JH 11372
« on: June 08, 2009, 04:09:55 PM »
Well a year ago me and my wife we have moved from Williamsburg (Brooklyn) to JH.
This are for me ten good and ten bad things about Jackson Heights 11372.

Cool
Trees and gardens
The Latinos
The houses
The birds
The street smell at little India
The old ladies dressed up
The transgenders
Biking
The fish market in Northen B.
Daniel Droom

Suck
The trash and poop in the street
Cops
The train`s noise on Roosevelt ave
My neighbor which complain about the noise even when I`m farting
The people that dig in the trash that spread the junk all around and whoever feed pigeons.
Find a parking spot and drive along the 37ave
No houses with solar panels
No benches on 37ave
The Y Gallery
Small tubes of oil colors on 37ave priced $5.99

great topic!
welcome to the neighborhood, Daniel, and I like those light fixtures you make.

Cool:
the celebrities around town like the old colombian crossdressing guy with the parrot and dog, the older guy with personalized spray painted shirts like snoopy and stuff, and allen from the thrift shop. I always see these guys.
Arepa Lady!
Corona!
riding my bike fast in the streets around the cars
FooD!!!
JH Triplex
3am
the plethora of trains - how i can get home from anywhere.
the BQE
Elmhurst!

Suck:
"quiet enjoyment"
police/meter maids writing tickets on a quota
drunks sleeping in the street
homeless people who get the ambulance called on them every few nights
Broadway between roosevelt ave and where the food starts again. That mile is pretty much useless to me (until I have to go to the hospital)
Swine Flu! ahhh, school's out!
impenetrable language barriers
friends who think queens is too far
people littering without thought
food cart haters

Great thread.  My wife and I also emigrated from Williamsburg. There are things I love about both nabes
Here is my take on the topic:
Williamsburg vs JH
McCarren Park vs Flushing Meadows CP      Advantage JH
Restaurants with "ambiance"      Advantage WB
Restaurants with great food      Advantage JH
Bars and pubs      Advantage WB
Bedford Ave vs 37th Ave:
I)annoying double parked cars       Advantage WB
II)annoying double parked hipsters      Advantage JH
III)Wine and cheese      Advantage WB
IV) Baked goods and butchers      Advantage JH
Junky used clothing stores vs junky new clothing stores      tie (both suck)
Brooklyn Brewery vs …..??      Advantage WB
Architecture      Advantage JH
Arts and galleries      Advantage WB
Greenery, trees and flowers      Advantage JH
People stealing trees and flowers      Advantage WB

Really? I guess Flushing Meadows is much bigger, but it's not walking distance from JH. If you live in Williamsburg, however, you're probably walking distance from McCarren Park. Williamsburg also has that new park on the waterfront, which isn't much of a park, but it's in the neighborhood and right on the waterfront.

Don't get me wrong, I like McCarren Park, but it is small & crowded, and apart from the new track, it is in tough shape.  The view from the new WB waterfront park is great, but half of it is a concrete slab and the other half is overgrown and rocky.  FMCP, while not walking distance is a quick bike ride away and there is so much to do, with the pool, the zoo, the tennis courts, mini golf etc.

GREAT TOPIC

COOL
The guys who sell $1 books on the street
Gay bars and gay parade and gay festival where a Catholic church had a table inviting you to attend.  That's tolerance!
Lots of cheap fruit
Independent pharmacies
Colombian food, bakeries, and coffee
Reasonable rent
Great transport
Trees and plants
Those Islamic vendors with the colorful polyester prayer rugs and shiny copies of the Koran
Lots of statues of lions

SUCK
That dirty, smelly corner behind the supermarket where people redeem their huge bags of cans and bottles
No parks with grass
No outdoor restaurants
The only gym is kind of skanky (but real cheap)
Brick row houses converted to rooming houses with ridiculously neglected front yards full of junk and debris
Those guys on Roosevelt who say "Chicas, Chicas", oh dear.
Bed Bugs
Too many stores that sell lots of junk
Rat traps right in front of the apartment buildings.  Oh sure, I'd move in there!  Get some cats!
That filthy train station at 74th + Roosevelt.  What could be a nice gateway to the neighborhood is disgusting and dirty.  Can someone please clean the bird poop off the turnstiles?  Can you please sweep the 2 inches of dust and dirt off the ledges by the stairwell?  Seriously!

Would that be the "G as in Ghost" train?  People say it stops at Roosevelt Ave but I can never figure out when it runs.  I think I ended up on it accidentally a few times when I was coming from Rego Park and was waiting for the R/V.  The times when I have actually needed to be on it to go to Brooklyn, I have gone to Court Sq. to find it.

I'd agree we don't have enough, but there are definitely some.  Check out our outdoor dining thread for some options.

Unfortunately, most of that list refers to Astoria :(  Where is our JH outdoor seating?

I haven't gone to check the link posted above, but off-hand I know that Pio Pio on Northern Blvd. has outdoor seating in the back.  Also, as I walked by Mehfil on 37th Avenue the other evening, I noticed that they had the store front windows and doors all open.  It's not exactly sidewalk seating, but the entire front of the restaurant was open giving it a more casual appeal.
