It's My Park Day/Family Fun Day
 
Saturday, May 16, 2009
11 to 2 p.m.
 
Travers Park
78th Street between Northern Boulevard and 34th Avenue 
 
We will be cleaning and planting in the park.
Help plant sunflowers, marigolds and corn – yes, corn.
 
Information on The Green Agenda for Jackson Heights.
We are organizing now for meetings in the fall that will produce the Green Agenda.
 
Environmental exhibits.
*Learn to compost and to organize your building for composting from the Queens Botanical Garden, which often has major discounts on NYC-subsidized composting bins discounts.
*The latest on recycling from the New York City Council on the Environment, which recently began a clothing/materials recycling program.
 
It’s My Park Day is a citywide event to clean, green and celebrate our parks. Family Fun and its environmental exhibits are the Jackson Heights take on the event.

Just curious, why corn?  Also, where are you doing the plantings?  Last time I checked there was very little green space in the park.  Best of luck to you.

I also just heard from a nieghbor that the park is treated with rat poison. I find this dangerous with kids digging in the dirt

I have always thought corn is a very attractive plant!  If it's sweet corn, then watch out for the neighborhood raccoons!  They can clean out rows of corn in a single night (i'm outing myself here as originating from a flyover state).
