Compost collection alternatives?
« on: June 28, 2020, 12:43:07 PM »
We asked at the farmer's market today about compost collection.    The people at the info tent told us the compost collection was defunded and can be expected back July 2021.

Every couple weeks I make 10+lbs of spent grains from brewing beer and without compost collection they go in the trash.  Does anyone keep chickens locally?  I understand chickens love spent grains.

I've been looking for an alternative too.  (So far, unsuccessfully.)  I hate throwing compostable garbage in the trash!

I have heard JH scraps is going to reopen soon.
The jackson-Moore cemetery garden has food scrap drop off on Saturday mornings now.
Smiling Hogshead in LIC is open for food scrap drop-off for an as-you-can sliding scale donation on the honor system. It is open Dawn to dusk everyday. The drop off is on the corner of Skillman and Pearson place.
There are 2 groups in sunnyside: sunnyside scraps and a new group on 45th street.
Sunny scraps i think operates on sunday mornings and the 45th street group is Saturday mornings.
If you check #saveourcompost on Instagram there are probably more. Many more small groups are reopening often now despite the DSNY de-funding.
