Ocasio-Cortez Criticizes Mayor’s Jail Plan, Calls for ‘No New Jails’

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has come out against the Mayor’s borough-based jail plan joining the likes of Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer and the advocacy group No New Jails.

Ocasio-Cortez took to Instagram Wednesday to call on the city council to vote against the proposal or to at least delay the vote scheduled for Oct. 17.

“We shouldn’t be building new jails,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote in the Instagram post. Ocasio-Cortez endorsed a report published in September by No New Jails NYC, a group of activists who want Rikers to close without any new jails being built....

....The city and most advocates for closing Rikers Island have condemned Ocasio-Cortez and those who share her views.

They argue that the only way to close Rikers Island is through the construction of borough-based jails since the city doesn’t have enough cells to cater to the prison population.

Excluding Rikers, the city only has enough space for 2,100 inmates. There are currently about 7,000 inmates detained across the city....

The cheapest option would be to build prefabricated jail cells and stack them on Rikers. Building 5 custom jail towers at 11 billion is another boondoggle. Also there is no outside recreation space. You could build bigger cells and ease overcrowding conditions by using prefabricated cells. You could even float them on a barge before you use a crane to lift them into place.

If they close Rikers then new jails must be built... somewhere.  I don't know why this is a policy issue, it sounds more like a simple math problem.

Why not just convert Trump tower, seem like a perfect replacement for Riker jail. Plus is already have all the maximum security and just in time for his retirement.

This is how to build the jails for probably $4 billion and spend the other $7 billion building new housing and schools. Why close Rikers if all you need is new buildings? Nobody wants to live next to a jail. The vast majority of these people are typically guilty of the most disgusting crimes.

people have lived next to jails for centuries, across America, including NYC (see: Brooklyn House of Detention, "The Tombs"). Granted, the people living hext to those jails weren't wealthy, but they were unharmed.

It seems like a done deal but $11 billion to build jails in each borough seems like a insane waste of money. Even if you close Rikers and open a solar farm (which could be placed on the roofs on a new jail) the land will never be clean because it is built on a ash dump. Those new jails could become quickly crowded if there is a crime wave in NYC like in 1991.

It seems my logic of building new cheaper jails is already seen as dangerous. The current dope from the slope is intent on leaving a huge debt on taxpayers.

Remember, even those who are locked up deserve safe housing.  It's up to us taxpayers to provide it for them.  Duh!

It would benefit La Guardia airport to get a hold of that land.... the airport then can expand it landing strip.
