What were all the damn fireworks last night (Saturday)? They kept waking us and our neighbors up.

Was going on Friday night as well.  I was looking around for what the celebration might be but came up empty.  Diwali isn't until the end of the month.

What's weird is I don't SEE anything. It's the obnoxious noisy part of fireworks without the pretty sparkly part.

I see 'em, they're pretty good.  Just wish I knew what it was all for.

Did the Yankees play yesterday?  I thought it was for the start of Dasara (an Indian holiday that usually contains fireworks and bonfires). I noticed people were more dressed up than usual yesterday - lots of really pretty saris.

Dassari, followed by Navaratri. the month leading up to Diwali has a lot of weekend festivals/holidays.

Turns out they originated on Pier 16 - my boss said it was ridiculously loud in Brooklyn Heights. There was a big Diwali festival at the Seaport yesterday; maybe it was related (I know it's early but I guess the actual date is too close to Halloween).

The Notify NYC app told me something about fireworks. I dismissed the notification without really looking at it, so don't know what it was about. I'd encourage folks to download it and use it. You can change the settings to get just the kind of notifications you want, including mass transit disruptions, road closures, weather, weather notification, traffic disruptions, etc.

I don't think we would have heard those ones in Jackson Heights... it sounded like they were being set off on 37th Ave or near there
