Queens District Attorney, Democratic Primary June 25
« on: March 27, 2019, 03:58:20 PM »
I'm curious to hear thoughts on this one.  I haven't seen any other posts about it.

Here's a pretty good summary of the race and the candidates: http://www.gothamgazette.com/state/8326-crowded-race-election-queens-district-attorney-and-reset-prosecutorial-agenda

And here's a quick rundown of who is endorsing who: https://www.cityandstateny.com/articles/politics/campaigns-elections/endorsements-queens-district-attorney-candidates.html

Announced candidates are:
Tiffany Caban
Melinda Katz
Rory Lancman
Gregory Lasak
Betty Lugo
Mina Malik
Jose Nieves

If I can try to sum it up succinctly: It seems like Lasak and Lugo are running as relative moderates with criminal justice experience; Katz and Lancman are running as politicians who see the DA as a person who can fix policy issues; and Caban, Malik and Nieves are running as criminal attorneys who want to reform the DA's office.

Tiffany Cabán Wants To Do More Than 'Reform' The Antiquated Queens DA's Office

Also very curious to hear what people are thinking about this race.

Progressives seem to be very excited about Cabán (https://theintercept.com/2019/03/26/tiffany-caban-queens-district-attorney/), and I like that she has such a fresh vision, informed by her work on the "other side"... but I have serious doubts about her level of experience and expertise, and her ability to run a large office. I think she's been a public defender (certainly an honorable job) for just a handful of years. She seems like someone with great ideas but not necessarily the right qualifications.

I haven't seen much talk about Mina Malik, but at least on paper, she seems like an excellent candidate. She was an assistant DA in Queens for over a decade, so she certainly knows the ropes, and she's been an outspoken advocate of criminal justice reform. She's also run a large office (the Civilian complaint review board, which handles complaints about NYPD treatment—certain good issues for a DA to be aware of). https://hls.harvard.edu/faculty/directory/11611/Malik

It seems like it may be a race between Caban (DSA/WFP endorsement, grassroots organizing behind her), Katz (name recognition, Queens Dem machine), and Lancman, but I'd love to see more in-depth coverage about all the candidates—like that Gothamist article on Caban—so that we really can make more informed choices. I know there was already one debate about a month ago, but I think more are planned.

The Queens Daily Eagle has had ongoing coverage of this race:

While I agree with many (most? all?) of the positions that Tiffany Caban has taken, I agree that she is way too inexperienced to be running that office as DA.

Interesting coverage of how fundraising is shaping up in the DA race (from great new NYC publication The City):

DEVELOPERS DONATE BIG TO QUEENS DA CANDIDATE WHO VOWS CONSTRUCTION CRACKDOWN

https://thecity.nyc/2019/04/developers-back-katz-for-queens-da-despite-crackdown-vow.html

Katz’s fundraising filings with the state Board of Elections show that more than $250,000 of the roughly $1 million her two campaign funds had collected through Jan. 11 came from real estate developers and other industry interests. That makes her the seven-way contest’s top recipient so far of real estate-related contributions.

Article re Tiffany Cabán and her plan to decriminalize sex work in Queens if elected.

BuzzFeed News:

Sex Work Could Soon Be Allowed In A Huge Part Of New York City

A headline-grabbing candidate for district attorney in New York City — who became a favorite of progressives after getting Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s endorsement — plans to single-handedly make the borough of Queens the first major metropolitan area in the country where sex work would, effectively, not be a crime.

If Tiffany Cabán wins the Democratic primary in late June and general election in November — and actually puts her plan in place — it would mark one of the biggest successes for the sex work decriminalization movement that, after years of struggling to gain mainstream traction, has growing popularity and political influence across the country.

the legislature has fast tracked the decriminalization, so it's pretty much a done deal.

Ok. Now Jackson Heights will famously become the Red Light District of NYC and the USA. Amsterdam, we're your competition.

Hang on to your hats folks, we're going to be having quite a ride.

And we're gonna have front row seats!

Amazon, no. Sex business, yes. (And all the sex tourism that comes with that)

Wild times ahead...

I lived for a bit near a Red Light District overseas. Just wait, folks, you ain't seen nothing yet...

Have to say I am feeling besieged by some of the Caban supporters. The more I see and hear I
want to run from them. Can I please be allowed some space to make up my own mind?
 Thanks.

Lancman is out and supporting Katz who has no experience in criminal law. This is the best the party can support? What a complete joke!
