The results of my Google search: the owner used to have a similar shop in Port Washington, NY, which he closed in 2013. He has been on various Food Network shows including one where his weight loss journey was covered: 500 lbs to 400 lbs. And he has been in top positions in more than one very high-end hotel in NYC. I had the same thought: I don't need this so nearby! But since the weight loss journey, I would hope he might include some less-rich offerings on his menu.

I think Lety's is a neighborhood institution with a loyal, longtime clientele, and would not be affected by this. And E77 is more like a coffeehouse in that its wine/beer offerings are a big draw, and it runs various arts events--live music at night, art talks, poetry readings, etc. This new place will be a breakfast and lunch place--E77 is busy all day but especially at night, for the events and the fact that it acts as a local place to have some beer/wine and relax--which is a function for which it has little competition around here, except for the Queensboro, which is far enough away that I don't think they compete too much for that kind of business.

I was going to say, E77 does a solid business as a hub for groups of toddlers, which I think given the layout this place will not supplant.

If this Bakery/Cafe becomes highly successful how can it not effect others in the area.  We'll soon see about loyalty.

I spoke to the owner yesterday. They won't be making their own bread, but all of the bread will be from Balthazar bakery in Manhattan.

That sounds promising. Although I've always found the bread from Balthazar to be a bit over priced, it will be great to be able to pick up a loaf of good bread when I'm too busy (or too lazy) to go to Astoria. It's hard to beat the pane di casa at Gian Piero Bakery for $3.50.

E77 also sells (or sold) some Balthazar products. croissants, mostly. the bread they make is terrific.

bread is the benchmark for a bakery, and if it's balthazar that's going to be supplying - i'll continue taking the long walk to Canelle.

Balthazar is a special looking place but their baked goods don't hold a candle to Canelle.

Yes, it is a partial disappointment. I was looking forward to freshly made bread. I had delusions of German pretzels and breadsticks.

I can't imagine walking all the way to Canelle located on 31st Ave & 73 Street for a loaf of bread regardless of how good it is.  I'll settle for a loaf of bread at Farine Baking Company which is just a 5 minute walk and most likely just as good.

Me too. I love Cannelle but rarely get there. I’m very happy to have this Cannelle-like option close by.

Lots of details about Farine on Jackson Heights Post.

Items on the lunch menu will include avocado and smoked salmon tartines; naan pizzas baked in a tandoori oven; and a spicy fried chicken sandwich. Brunch items will include Eggs Benedict; spinach and goat milk frittata; waffles; and a chicken burger.

The establishment will serve traditional French pastries as well as some of Mignano’s unique creations. Baked treats include hand rolled dark chocolate candied ginger truffles; warm chocolate souffle with Sicilian pistachio gelato; and triple chocolate chunk cookies.
