Petland Discounts Closing
« on: January 31, 2019, 02:30:39 PM »
I'm seeing lots of reports about Petland Discounts closing in NY, CT, and NJ. I haven't seen a list of stores, but some outlets are just saying "all stores" in these states are closing. It wasn't my favorite pet store option in the neighborhood, but it is still sad that our options are shrinking even more.

Anyone have any news on the ground from the store itself?

Yes, I saw the news reports also about the decision to close the stores following the recent passing of Neil Padron, the chain’s founder. I don’t shop at the store because it doesn’t carry the brand of food I feed my dog. That said, the Jackson House store has been a staple on 82nd Street for many years, so I’ll be sad to see it close at some point. Also, I think Petco and online stores like Chewy offer strong competition, so sales for the chain may have been suffering.

I stopped in Petland Discount today and the salesperson told me that the store would be closing and that all Petland Discounts are closing.  Now we have lost two pet stores!!

Blame Amazon, people walk in scan the item and order online.

JK Resident:  You should also include Walmart which has destroyed small businesses since they were established in 1962.  Amazon just 10 years ago on February 1, 2009 was a very small company with a Market Cap of $29.9  Billion Dollars (489 Million outstanding shares x $61.15).  Any company with a Market Cap below $50 Billion is a Small Cap Company.  Its now the largest Company in the World with a Market Cap of $794 Billion (still only 489 Million Outstanding Shares).  Its only in recent years that it has had a significant impact on small, medium and large businesses.  On August 31, 2018, Amazon very briefly became the first company ever to reach a Market Cap of $1 Trillion Dollars.  It will happen again very shortly as the stock market recovers.

While sad to see them go, it is much easier to shop online and have everything delivered to my home! Chewy.com has the best customer service I've ever dealt with and better pricing. When I go to Petco (which is rarely) there is never anyone in there and the prices are very high. While I am all for Mom/Pop shops bottom line is customer service and price for me!

What is it recovering from? It had a downturn recently, but there's no reason to believe that is over (at least that I can see).

Matt, on December 24, 2018, Amazon closed at $1307 a share.  Just 6 weeks later on February 1, 2019 it closed at $1626 a share an increase of 24.4%.  There's 44 Analyst that closely follow the stock with an average price target (one year) of $2,138 which I strongly feel is very conservative.  The stock did reach a price on September 4, 2018 of $2050.50 (for a few seconds) that made it (briefly) a $1 Trillion Market Cap Company.  A favorable Trade Agreement between the USA & China is extremely important.  If this happens the stock market will Rally which will include Amazon.  If we look at the stock market Long Term (5+ years), the growth potential for Amazon is massive compared to Apple (#2), Microsoft (#3) and Google (#4) who will see limited growth.

Thank Goodness for Amazon, and if you were lucky enough to buy their stocks

Does anyone know why this closed?  It was there over 25 years.

I remember that they use to sell small animals like birds and fishes.  I hope they were relocated before the store closed.
