My experience at JH City MD
« on: October 25, 2018, 07:44:27 PM »
I brought my spouse to JH CityMD on Roosevelt Avenue this morning. He had food poisoning and was slightly dehydrated.

While registering at the desk he passed out and fell to the floor. He came to, and we helped him onto a seat. The doctor came out and stood there. I asked her, Chien Jung Chu, to check his blood pressure and heart to see if we could go to Cornell Medical center. She said, "No, it is not his turn."

The receptionist called 911.

"Dr" Chu stood there for 5 minutes not doing anything. After a while (I do not know how long, maybe 15 minutes) the EMT's came and brought him to the hospital.

that's horrible, and i hope he's alright.

i had two bad experiences there -- not nearly that bad, but very brusque treatment after exceedingly long waits. if you need a place like this again, Instamed on Northern is much better. both doctors we've seen there have been considerate and thorough.

He is doing ok. He may need surgery. I will find out tomorrow.

The EMT told me that CityMD is not required to have a doctor or a nurse in the facility. I guess it is manly for flu shots which can be obtained in the drugstore anyway. (We like Frank's. )

He also told me that Columbia Presby has an Emergent Care facility on Northern Blvd around 75th street.

I hope your husband Is doing better. What that "Dr" did was unconscionable. I would definitely file complaints with the state medical board and state department of health.

And complaint to City MD management. I had good experiences going there once or twice, so I am surprised at this. I thought it was very professional. But this is good to know. I hope you file all appropriate complaints.

I went last November and had a positive experience (not Dr Chu).  I know someone who went on Tuesday and had a positive experience.  Management needs to be aware of this incident.

This is insane! So sorry you experienced this. I have been to this CityMD once and it wasn't terrible, but it wasn't good either. I went because I slipped and fell and my supervisor wanted me to make sure I had no concussion. The Dr. saw me for 5 seconds and told me to stop Googling symptoms. I'll stick to Instamed on northern Blvd.

That's horrible, I'm sorry your spouse had to go through that.

I had a bad experience at that City MD too—I went there for a yeast infection (which I'd been there for in the past) and had a male doctor (don't remember his name, I think he was a PA actually) who asked me a million times if I was pregnant. I reassured him that it was impossible for me to be pregnant at the time and he still kept asking, then made so many confusing and condescending comments regarding my treatment that the nurse/assistant apologized on his behalf after he left the room. He was asking me which medicine I take for a very common condition and then sitting at his computer Googling it, asking me to spell it for him and still spelling it wrong even after I told him like three times. He told me not to take two medicines together that the nurse later clarified were completely fine to be taken together. Won't be back there again.

That's awful. Sorry that happened to you and your spouse.

I've been to that City MD numerous times for mild cold/flu/sinus symptoms with varying levels of professionalism. The negative experience I had involved the PA focused on unrelated symptoms that I see a specialist for. I had to tell him to please focus on the issue that I was actually there for and he wasn't a help for that, either. If I went in there again and he was assigned to me, I would have to walk out. However, I don't think that would be the case because it seems their staff is very transient.

I went there on a Sunday afternoon when I was having back spasms and was in extreme pain.  After a long wait, a doctor saw me and gave me a prescription and told me to keep horizontal.  Two days later I was still in pain and went to my GP.  He took the medicine from me, threw it in the trash and told me that I had been prescribed something that had nothing to do with my back issue.  He gave me something different that had me back on my feet in less than 24 hours.

I posted on 10/26 a positive review based on a visit a year ago.  Based on the most recent reviews, I plan to avoid this place.

For what it's worth I have twice in the past two years had to resort to seeking medical help at an urgent care center. I have to say I had good experiences at both the Northwell GoHealth clinics at 102-29 Queens Blvd, Forest Hills, and 37-01 Broadway, Astoria. Both are easily accessible by IND subway or a short cab ride.

We have used City Med on Roosevelt at least four times over the past few years. On each occasion we were  seen promptly, with care and courtesy and more importantly with useful advice and treatment. I just don't recognize the descriptions of the service from our experience. We have invariably seen Dr.Venegas who has been excellent-thorough,patient, and well informed. If he had a primary practice outside of City Med I would certainly consider using him as my PCP. So while I don't  want to disqualify the experiences of anyone else ours has been positive enough to consider City Med our first option in the event of a pressing medical need.

My spouse is still in the hospital, recovering from 2 operations.

It depends what you mean by pressing medical needs. CityMD is a valid place to go for a flu shot, altough with all of the drugstores in JH, why bother. And, it may be a valid place to go if you superficially cut your finger. But it is not the place to go for any emergency that will need anything but superficial care. If you are having a heart attack, a stroke, cut your finger and can see the bone, or broke your leg, CityMD is useless. And, unlike my spouse who did not want to go to the ER, if you have passed out and fallen to the ground, you should not go to CityMD.

Many people have had good experiences at CityMD, but it is not a primary medical facility. And, the EMT in the ambulance told me that CityMD is not required to have either a doctor or Physicians Assistant at the facility.

CityMD is almost no better than going to the school nurse.
