Old Signage
« on: October 14, 2018, 11:34:32 AM »
The temporary banner over the Al-Araf storefront on 37th Ave is gone, and what remains is the vintage store sign below. It's not clear from the photo, but there's an outline remaining from the lettering that reads, Jason. I've been in the neighborhood for quite a long time, but don't have a memory about that location being a dry cleaner. That said, I love seeing the older sign, and am wondering what's next in terms of it being removed or covered again.

Hmmm... I've been giving this some more thought. I do recall there being two dry cleaners within a block or two of each other. The one across from the school remains, but I'm not sure if the other one was Jason.

Editing to add that that was the location of Phoenix French cleaners! Can't believe I didn't immediately remember that one!  ::)

Phoenix was our go to: the owner told me they left over - what else? - a rent increase, from $3500 a month to $6500. wondering what the lease might go for now....

I've noticed that signage as well, it is a nice one, especially with the blue ground against the silver.

Love when the original signage is uncovered and restored.  Makes the neighborhood feel "historic" and gives it some charm.  Hope the new owners and the rest of the block follow suit.

love the old signage and the variety, but the trend seems to be towards a homogenized modernity - like the block across 37th between 75th and 76th.

Thanks for the photo. I haven't been by there since it was uncovered. I tried to shoot it when the old awning was still partly up, but the result wasn't good.

Here's another vintage sign from the neighborhood. This one is from the Jackson Heights Beautification Group's Instagram account. They mentioned that it was uncovered at a storefront located at 37th Ave and 88th St.

The sign is on the southern corner and covers the front and side. I saw it yesterday, Sunday.

The old signs have been covered. The corner is now a bright neon La Elegancia bakery.
