Improving Safety on Northern Boulevard
« on: September 19, 2018, 11:16:36 AM »
We live near the new boulevard of death in Queens. Five pedestrians were killed near our section of Northern Boulevard over the past 12 months.

Here's an important petition asking that the city to solve the problem.

https://campaigns.transalt.org/FixNorthernBlvd-The-New-Boulevard-of-Death

Please take a second to sign it, your signature is important and takes one minute.

Here the people killed:
Jose Gomez, 71, killed September 13, 2017 on Northern Blvd. near 85th St.
Myriam Nino, 82, struck on January 5, 2018 at Northern Blvd. and 90th Street in Jackson Heights, died on January 20th
Giovanni Ampuero, 9, killed on April 28, 2018 on 70th Street and Northern Boulevard
Carlos Gavilanes, 47, killed on May 21, 2018 on Northern Boulevard between 100th and 101st Streets
Unidentified male, 70, killed on September 9, 2018 on Northenrn Boulevard and 108th Street

Assemblyman Michael DenDekker (D-Jackson Heights) added,

“When I have my grandchildren when I cross Northern Boulevard and that light turns green, I’m scared as hell because I have to look at a hundred different directions not knowing whether a car is going to yield to me. I think when that light turns green I should be able to cross the street without having to worry about a car hitting me.”

Good news. It looks like the NYC DOT is (finally) taking some steps to improve safety for pedestrians on Northern Blvd. See this from the NY Post.

I still think problematical roads like Northern need to have all motor traffic at intersections stopped while pedestrians are crossing.

As mentioned before, here is a link to the Department of Transportation's project page for the Comprehensive Safety Redesign of Northern Blvd: https://nycdotprojects.info/project/northern-blvd

There's also an interactive map where you can provide feedback on specific problem areas or interventions you'd like to see:
https://nycdotprojects.info/project-feedback-map/northern-blvd-feedback-map

I would encourage anybody with an interest in making Northern Blvd. safer to spend some time providing feedback.  Or, if you prefer to provide feedback in person, make sure to attend one of the upcoming public workshops (starting Monday evening at the Louis Armstrong School!)

Just a reminder that there will be a Northern Blvd Safety Improvement Workshop TODAY from 6:30 -8:30pm at Louis Armstrong Middle School. It's our chance to give input in person and change the face of that street.

It was a very interesting and engaging workshop tonight.  Great turnout, thoughtful and productive discussions (at my table, at least).  If you couldn't make it, there's another workshop being held on Monday, 10/22, 6:30 pm at P.S. 151 (50-05 31st Ave).  More information is here: https://nycdotprojects.info/project/849/events

On a related topic, if you're interested in a safer network for bicycles in our part of Queens, there's a meeting of NYCDOT's "Big Jump" initiative this Wednesday, 10/17 at 6:30 pm at Club Cultural de Queens, 41-19 108th Street (corner of 42nd Ave).  More information is available here: https://nycdotprojects.info/project-updates/community-board-3-4-advisory-committee-meeting
