New “trendy” Taco Joint in the works on 37th
« on: June 16, 2018, 10:43:39 AM »
I was walking up 37th Ave. into Corona and noticed this new taco joint called ‘Taco Mix’  going up at around 90th St. From the façade, dare I say it looks trendy? Maybe like a business you would more likely see in Astoria or Long Island city than Jackson Heights.   I’m curious what the interior will look like and most importantly, how good the tacos are!

This is the same business as the one in Harlem. Been there for a pretty long time. I used to love it although my friends remarked back at me that it got more expensive and not as good. It will be opening next month when they get the gas in, so we'll see what happens!

I pass by that place every day after dropping my son off at daycare. The sign wasn’t up the last time I passed it (was on vacay until yesterday). But I always thought even just the windows looked particularly unlike its neighboring storefronts. I figured something different was coming to the spot.

I will pass by soon for a look-see. This is my neighborhood. If I am imagining the same block, that strip has experienced some awful awful crimes for at least a decade, hence the bucket cops. Would love to see a turn around. The doggie shop is trendy to say the least. The pizza shop is clean and I've had some good pizza; the lady there cares about what she serves. The paint store is a long time anchor and resource.

There's a deficit in good coffee in that area. Someone could make a fortune....

The single room occupancy coming up at Roosie is a concern, tho.

What about this looks trendy? That's it's new? I don't think you will see anything organic or ingredients that Mexicans are not familiar with.

Can't wait to have a new post-daycare dinner spot.

Eater loves it

Taco Mix Queens
In an aggressive expansion plan, there will soon be a total of four Taco Mixes, three recently descended from the legendary closet taqueria in East Harlem on 116th Street that specializes in al pastor — intertwined pork fragments turning on a vertical spit marinated in pineapple juice. A friend and I learned not to come too early to the new Jackson Heights branch, since the day’s pork cylinder might not be fully operational yet, and your al pastor taco filling may be pulled from a drawer and reheated on the griddle. It’s still good, but you may want to opt for the barbacoa instead, which is as spectacularly flavorful as barbacoa (steamed lamb or goat) gets. Ask for the house-pickled vegetables, which include onions, carrots, cauliflower and jalapeños. It was one of the best tacos we’ve had all year. 90-04 37th Ave., between 90th and 91st Streets, Jackson Heights

When I lived in Manhattan 5+ years ago I was a huge fan of the original/only location in East Harlem.

Tried the new JH outpost of it tonight and was not disappointed!  Totally an authentic taco joint, don't be fooled by the modern/minimalist decor.

The menu has a great selection (tacos, tortas, cemitas, sopas, nachos) and they prepared everything fresh while I waited.  We got mostly al pastor tacos since that's their specialty and they were definitely the best, but we also tried the bistec (very good), carnitas (not crispy enough for my taste), and chorizo (not dry enough for my taste).  Lots of toppings available but kept it simple with onions/cilantro, limes, salsa verde, and pickled veggies (onions, peppers, carrots, broccoli, and cauliflower).

Just be warned there's no seating.  There's an L-shaped counter to stand and eat at but not conducive to eating in with kids, we did take out.
