Tibetan-Japanese Restaurant

for what it's worth, the sign in the window of the former Pauglina promises a Tibetan-Japanese restaurant. it's a hybrid i've experienced in other cities, and it can be really good if it's like that -- lots of veggie dishes, sort of "zen" vibe. probably not much sushi.

There were at least two similar places in Sunnyside when I lived there over a decade ago (although I think they described themselves as Nepali-Japanese rather than Tibetan). They were essentially Nepali restaurants with a sushi bar...none seem to be open any more.  One of them had a funny name with Yeti in it or something; memory fails me

Awang in Elmhurst is a great Indonesian restaurant with a sushi bar! The chef is from Indonesia but worked in sushi restaurants for years before opening his own place...

ugh, the appeal of sushi to make their place seem high end again....


Well, Wasabi Point started with sushi too but then realized it wasn't a good idea. They are one of the best Tibetan places out there. BTW, one of the owners just opened in the back of that place Chilis or whatever it's called now on 74th Street.

I'm intrigued by the sign that is up at the former Pauglina location for a Tibetan Japanese restaurant. I bet they will have some very interesting dumplings.
