Someone's got to start the spark...

Proposition: Sunday night dinner club that going to sometime adventurous, always authentic restaurants in Jackson Heights, Woodside, Corona, Elmhurst, Sunnyside, Astoria, and the surrounding neighborhoods within walking distance from the Jackson Heights subway stop.

We start in two Sundays, on October 19th (this weekend is Diwali).

So, for this first meeting of the Jackson Heights Food Group, I will give a few possibilities for you to decide:
Chivito De Oro (Uruguayan) 8402 37th Ave
Himalaya Yak (Tibetan/Nepalese) - 7220 Roosevelt Avenue
El Sitio (Cuban) - 6828 Roosevelt Ave

How about it?

Oh, wow!  What a great idea.  I've been curious about the Himalayan Yak, myself.  I'll eat anything though and I've never been to any of these restaurants before.

Woohoo!  I vote for Himalayan Yak!  I've tried it before but in the company of complainers and whiners (my parents) so I didn't enjoy myself.  Obviously I need to give this place another chance with much better company  Smiley

allllllright. seeing the favorable response, I will go ahead and make it official. I will make the homepage on my webpage for the public, but will give all the information here first.

Himilayan Yak it is. my friend wanted to go there this weekend, but I will try to maneuver her eyes away from there.

good to hear everyone wanting to do something.  tell your friends, let's see what happens.

here's an old review

here's a link to the menu which are just links to pictures i took from the street.

Take your friend to the place next to the Afghan kebab house on 37th Ave that says "Himalayan" on the window.  Has that place already been discussed on the Himalayan thread?  I can't keep up.

Anyway, back to talking about the get-together. . . . coolsmiley

that afghan place is on my radar. I heard good things about it from my friend... just havent had the occasion to visit.

as for my friend and himalayan, i got takeout with her from the himalayan fast food place on 37th rd and it was really good. i think that piqued her interest. im sure we'll sway away, im aiming for something in astoria after a salvation army run (brazilian or greek maybe)

You mean Thakali Kitchen?  I went there for the lunch buffet but sadly it was all Indian dishes.

Hi, I'm new to the board... love the idea of meeting for Sunday Night Dinner. I moved to JH a year ago and am totally up for meeting neighbors and checking out the food options. Is there room for one more on the 19th?

Good evening!  This is a great idea and I'm looking forward to getting the details for our first outing on the 19th.

Regards,

I am eager to go but uncertain if I will be able. I will be with another group for a late lunch (which they are mistakenly calling “brunch”) at 14:00 with the possibility of seeing a flick afterward, so I can probably only make it back to JH if dinner is late enough. What time will this shindig be going down?

there is plenty of room. right now this is the ONLY place I am advertising it. a JHL exclusive... haha

I have no idea what to expect, and we will figure out the details for the future during the meeting I am sure.

so, I figure there will be around 7 people.  so how about 7 for 7?
thats it - 7 people for 7 pm . easy to remember.

more or less people, doesnt matter, 7pm is good though, right?

and, check out this article on the new Yak.
http://newyork.seriouseats.com/2008/10/himalyan-yak-reopens-indian-nepali-tibetan-food-cuisine-queens-jackson-heights-nyc.html

and I made a page on my site as the anchor for it all - with everything you should know for the upcoming week (perpetually updating)

Greetings. I am new to the neighborhood and the Board. I walked by the Himalaya Yak yesterday when I was out doing some exploring and in the course of trying to find out more about it I came across this dinner group. It's a great idea and I would love to meet others in the neighborhood. I look forward to joining you all on the 19th!
