Sears Welcomes DOE Fund To Jackson Heights
August 20, 2008

Councilmember Helen Sears (D-Jackson Heights/Elmhurst) was joined by local business owners and area residents to formally welcome the "men in blue" of the Doe Fund's centerpiece Ready, Willing & Able program to Jackson Heights. Sears was able to secure the funding necessary to bring the Doe Fund's well-known Community Improvement Project street cleaning services to Jackson Heights. The hours and areas of operation will be 7:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, along 37th. Avenue between 70th. and 81st. Streets, along 37th. Road between 73rd. and 77th. Streets, and on 73rd. and 74th. Streets between Roosevelt and 37th. Avenues."The Doe Fund provides people in need the opportunity to break the cycles of homelessness, addiction, and criminal recidivism, while providing a much needed service to the community," said Sears.

I remember 73rd and 74th of Jackson Heights was chosen to receive some kind of cleaning program everyday for 2 years from the city starting in November.
is it happening now?

I saw couple of the Doe guys (blue uniforms) cleaning up this morning on 73rd near 37th Road.  So looks like they've started!

If these are the guys wearing "ready, willing and able" jackets, I've been seeing them for a couple of months now on my morning commute.  Not every day, though.

No, these guys are there for a while.  What I am talking about is supposed to be something new.
I remember someone posted about this new program in this forum and now I can't even find the post.
it is very weird.  Maybe it was deleted as if it never happened.

Jackson Height community sometimes get weird because we got 8 million dollars project about improving the traffic last year and nobody knows what happened to it as if it never happens, too.

FWIW, I walked through 74th yesterday afternoon from 37th Rd to 37th Ave & found it very clean. I don't know whether it was just my timing &/or the result of an organized clean-up effort but I saw only 3 pieces of litter: a small cardboard box, a crushed coffee cup & a parking ticket. Regardless of the cause, let's hope that it stays that clean.

Part of the problem is that trash baskets fill up way before they are scheduled to be emptied, and this is especially the case on weekends.  Once filled to capacity the street becomes the recipient of the litter.  Helen Sears recently received more discretionary funds, maybe some of this money could be used to increase the frequency of pickups.

The Jackson Heights Clean Streets Program started on December 15th, and will operate on Thursdays through Sundays.  Thank you Bryan and everybody else involved in making this happen!

Complaints about garbage on 73^rd and 74^th streets has reached another online discussion board. See http://www.banglacommunity.com/showthread.php/5111. It was posted back in 2007–08 but I just noticed it. (Has someone else already posted this here?)

if you are living in Jackson Heights, please listen to this.
Indian /Bangladesh area of Jackson Heights (73rd St. and 74st St) are getting dirty more and more. It is full of garbage on the street especially in front of stores owned by Bangladesh people. We have 24 hours open store on 73rd Streets where most of them are operated by bangladesh people. And there are many people hang out there and they don't know how to take care of their garbage and simply throw them on the street. And to make it worse, the store in front of the street don't care and leave the mess for a long time.
IT IS SOOO DISGUSTING!! IT IS A BIG SHAME!! Bangladesh people in Jackson Heights are really labeled as DIRTY PEOPLE because of this.

If you are living in Jackson Heights, please educate our people to trash their garbage in right place. DO NOT THROW THE GARBAGE ON THE STREET!!!
