One Singular Thai Sensation
Hungry City: Eim Khao Mun Kai and Khao Man Gai NY

This is it, the only dish on the menu, the reason the restaurant exists: chicken over rice on a paper plate, white on white on white. Pale-skinned moons of cucumber lie to one side, a lone stem of cilantro on top.

In Thai, it is called khao man gai, which translates as chicken fat rice, a sort of punkified version of Hainanese chicken rice. At Eim Khao Mun Kai, which opened in February in Elmhurst, Queens, the chicken is organic, poached whole with ginger and “secret” ingredients that the chef, Srivaset Sajchaacharamontri, will not divulge. (Krianganan Rawiophap, the owner of Eim Khao Mun Kai, invited Mr. Sajchaacharamontri to come to New York from Bangkok just to cook this dish.)

I just walked by this place today.  Very intriguing.  Must try soon!

Here's the Joe DiStefano article that wooden_soldier mentioned: Comforting Thai Hawker Chicken Comes to Elmhurst
And here's the Wikipedia entry on Hainanese Chicken Rice

I finally tried this place after walking by a few times after I had already eaten. It is delicious and simple. I'll definitely be back!

The other place covered in the article is around where I work, and I go there all the time. "Delicious and simple" is a perfect way to describe this mix of poached chicken over rice served with broth. The garlic sauce they make is fantastic.
I'm going to try the Elmhurst one as soon as I can.

I'm definitely curious about the place in LIC now too, Superclam. It's interesting that the article noted that the restaurant in LIC made their sauce less spicy to meet the tastes of their customer base. This makes great comfort food for the winter months.

I'm not someone who likes extremely spicy food, but a little more "zing" wouldn't hurt in this case.

This place is now one of my favorite chicken spots in NYC.  The chicken, as good and flavorful as it is, plays second fiddle to the rice. Together, it's a beautiful, garlicky mix of protein and carbs that makes me cancel my plans and go straight to bed.
