Ask your favorite restaurants if you can put it in their window. Or put it up on the bulletin board at the supermarket or the laundromat.

They're coming here.

Getting them to post is another story.

THEM! (1954) was the title of one of my favorite science fictions.

But I digress.
First, do no harm.

Wow!  That rocks!   I love it.

I think bulletin boards in residential buildings (with board approval) would be the greatest help to us at this stage.
But if anybody does plan to go out and approach a business, please ask their permission before posting anything, respect their wishes, and be courteous.  We don't want to be seen as a nuisance.  We have approached a few stores about making business cards available or allowing us to post them in their windows or bulletin boards.  Many are very cautious.   I think they tend to be more willing to post signs for one time events than for a website that will exist on an open ended basis.

This is a great website and I see there are some very helpful people on here.  I just wonder if many JH residents know about it?

I just moved from Astoria, where Astorians.com has a crazy amount of people, and there are new posts every  minute.  It's a great way to waste your work day away  :) and I find that several people on the site know the answer to any question you could ask and new topics are popping up faster than you can read them all.  Is this site relatively new?

(moderator note: just merged this new thread with an older one called "we need more members")

This is a pretty new site.  Astorians launched in June 2004.  Thanks to a tremendous amount of help from its founder, Merm, Jackson Heights Life launched in November 2007.  We currently have about 1/4 of the traffic that Astorians has, measured in page views, and about 1/6 the number of posts.  We're continuing to grow, but the JH demographic tilts a bit older than Astoria.  I think fewer 20-somethings = less online chatting.

I think a little more visibility on the part of JHL would help drive up traffic on the site. Fliers, post cards, signage at local establishments might help to create a surge in new members on the site. In an ideal world JHL would have some sort of signage at community events etc.

I realize these things cost a little money, but perhaps a deal could be struck with something like the JH Film Fest where they direct movie goers to chat about the films on JHL, JHL would need to create a special section just for the movie but I imagine many people would sign on and explore the other areas of the site.

Similarly several local eateries get a lot of chat on this board so they should be happy to inform people to post positive comments on the site.

English isn't the primary language for many residents in JH. They wouldn't visit an English site.

Maybe there's an opportunity for JHL en Espanol :)

Despite the language barrier that exists in JH, I do think there are quite a few English speakers who would happily log on to this sit if they knew it existed.

English isn't the primary language for many residents in JH. They wouldn't visit an English site.

Jackson Heights has a population of almost 100,000.  Say half are kids (just a guess).  This leaves 50,000 adults.  Even if only 10% are fluent in and comfortable with English (and I suspect it's much higher than that but I've never seen any statistics), that's 5,000 potential JHLife members.  Right now we have only 700 something, so I would say there's lots of potential.

If you page up to check out the earlier part of this thread, you will see where I offered to send JHLife business cards to anyone who wanted to distribute them to friends, etc.  The offer still stands.

How about this... I am new I found this site only cause my friend Andrew emailed me a thread that so happened to have a video of mine as topic.

Well I like the site and thought about different ways to get more traffic here.

Address labels....

Take a sheet of address labels the small white ones and print the website on it...

Take the sheet and every hidden treasure or topic of discussion in ,stick a label.

We can also talk to perhaps local restaurants/businesses that we have mentioned in a forum to also have the cards accessible.

The more curious will be drawn to the site to find more info on the community.

The more strategic we are the better locals we'll get.

Just a suggestion...

Thoughts???

Just wanted to let everyone know that my offer for JHL business cards still stands.

If you would like to help continue to get the word out about our site (especially now that we've had an important birthday  :coolsmiley: ) and you want me to mail you 10 or 20 business cards via regular snail mail, send me a PM with the address.
