Wash. DC doesn't like the rats in our subway system
« on: February 28, 2008, 11:07:10 AM »
When I was in DC last month, I noticed these posters inside the metro cars there that said "Unlike some subway systems (which will remain nameless), you don’t see rats the size of house cats roaming the Metro. Why not? Because we are so strict about eating and drinking in the system. So help us keep the critters away. Please don’t eat or drink on the Metro.”

I admit I felt a little offended just out of home-town pride.  Yes, I see the NYC rats all the time, but I also appreciate the comparative efficiency and breadth of the MTA system vs. DC's.

Now a NYC reporter is talking about the ads here and there are some choice comments from readers!

As a former DC resident, I can say that the Metro system leaves a lot to be desired.  It provides much faster service over long distances than NYC's system, but its headways are very long, and its bus service is terrible.

Plus, I'd rather have our little furry daredevils than a creeping police state:

Well, they do have a point, though.  Rats usually don't hang out where there's no sustenance.  I don't think I've ever taken a trip on the NYC Subway where I haven't seen food and/or food related trash on the floors, seats, platforms and tracks.

Doesn't NYC have a law prohibiting eating and drinking in the subways?  If there is such a law, it's obviously not enforced because people are doing it everyday.  I really have no issue with this as long as people put their litter in its place.  I recently came across some chicken bones inside a train car that were devoid of any trace of chicken.  I now wonder if someone sucked the bones dry or if one of the so-called furry little creatures had found a meal here.  Somehow, the image of rats scurrying throughout a train car rather than the tracks seems more intimidating to me.

I've seen signs on buses relaying a no food/no drink message and I thought years ago, there was a law prohibiting food, drink and smoke on the transit system.  NYC also had "No Spitting" signs on the trains and streets.

Paul Fleuranges of the MTA now issues this stern message:

Customers should also try to avoid eating on the subway...

I think that some people eat a protein bar or something when they are running late for work and want to eat a fast breakfast.

Bob, I suppose they had to repeal the no eating law because it was just too difficult to enforce.  Skimming through the MTA's Rules of Conduct, I noticed that there's a provision permitting beverages that are in covered containers.  There are also rules against riding on the roofs of subway cars and skateboarding in them.  YIKES!

The rules for those wishing to conduct themselves appropriately while riding the MTA: :coolsmiley:

You're absolutely right.  It's just unfortunate much of the leftovers and wrappings never seem to make it to the trash cans.  Thanks for the link!

Perhaps they should start adding Dining Cars to the trains!  ;)

We also have a lot of homeless people rifling through the garbage cans on the platforms.  Even if we get rid of the rats (wishful thinking), we'll still have a homeless problem in the subway system, and that's an even sadder sight to see than bunny-sized rats eating out of food wrappers.  :(

Speaking of bunny sized rats, I remember hanging out in the upper west side by Amsterdam and 110th Street.  There was or possibly still is an empty lot on a corner that seemed to attract lots of rats.  They were tremendous!  I thought they were cats until hubby made me take a closer look. :o
