39th District State Assembly Seat
« on: March 01, 2010, 01:38:14 PM »
According the The Daily News' The Daily Politics blog, Bryan Pu-Folkes has officially announced his candidacy for the 39th District Assembly seat.  This seat is currently occupied by Jose Peralta, so how this process pans out now is going to be very interesting.

I'm not sure if formal announcements have been made yet, but from what I've heard, Franciso Moya and William Salgado may also be running.  Here's a recent article from The Queens Courier on the topic.  This article was published February 17th, but it contains some basic information.

According to the New York Post, Hiram Monserrate has a Plan B in the event of a defeat at the March 16th Special Election.  The Post's sources say that he may eye the assembly seat currently held by Jose Peralta.

With the recent election of José Peralta to the 13th District State Senate seat, the 39th District Assembly seat has become available.  At this moment, we don't know if a special election will be called for by Gov. Paterson to fill the vacancy.  The options are a special election that would most likely occur by May or June, or we wait until Fall.

The candidates:

Bryan Pu-Folkes - Bryan Pu-Folkes for State Assembly

Francisco Moya - He lost a bid to the 21st District City Council to Julissa Ferreras in early 2009.  This is the seat that had been left vacant when Hiram Monserrate was elected to the State Senate.  I haven't found a website for Mr. Moya, so if anyone knows of one, please post it.

William Salgado - has expressed an interest in running, but has yet to formally announce his candidacy.

Let's wait and see if he makes a formal announcement any time soon.  For the moment, any thoughts on Bryan Pu-Folkes or Francisco Moya?

And then there's this from the Daily News:

What is it with special elections and Queens?

Gov. David Paterson sounded in no hurry this morning to fill the seat of former Assemblyman Jose Peralta, who was sworn in yesterday after defeating expelled former Sen. Hiram Monserrate for his 13th SD seat in Tuesday's special.

The governor made the small-d democratic argument, saying he might prefer to give the public "a full opportunity with primaries and a general election, which is the best way to fill a seat."

But as it turns out, there's a political motivation for his reluctance, too.

The Queens Democrats have a preferred candidate for Peralta's old seat, Francisco Moya, who also happens to be a former Paterson aide (during the governor's Senate minority leader days).

The problem with Moya is that he only moved into the 39th AD last fall (he notified the city Board of Elections of the switch on Sept. 23, 2009) from what appears to be the 35th AD, represented by Assemblyman Jeff Aubry.

Thanks for posting that article, Aronan.  Do you think Francisco Moya's residency issue will seriously come into play in Gov. Paterson's decision on scheduling an election?  If so, we may have to forego a much earlier special election.

In my opinion it probably will. Which is kind of unfortunate. If HM decides to run for the seat and Governor called the special election as soon as possible HM would be in a bad position. He probably doesn't have much cash left for campaigns, and he'd suffer from the media attention surrounding his recent defeat. If he waits until September, HM has the time to raise more cash, and will be distanced from the current media reports which may give him an advantage.

I look forward to having the opportunity to vote for Bryan.  He is a smart guy, a hard worker, and he is someone who really cares about the issues facing immigrant communities, low income families, and anyone who is getting a raw deal.  He doesn't need to invent a platform, like some new politicians do.  The work that he has been putting energy into for years will become his platform.

I don't get it, Moya has just moved into our neighborhood just to run for office after failing to win council, assembly and other positions. Why does he think he knows anything about us or our needs.   We should be angry if the Governor keeps us from voting for a state assemblyman to rep our area.  I've been told Moya is a lobbyist, but I cannot find any information on him. The articles state he worked for Paterson, but not now...  Does anyone know what he does?

Let me preface this with the fact that I know it is a snarky thing to say:

Look at the records of other people who have worked for Paterson and be very afraid. . .
