The end of the Queens machine?
« on: June 29, 2018, 12:43:44 PM »
The main messages and themes of this piece in the Times about Crowley and the machine seem spot-on, as far as I can tell.  But did the writer get any facts or nuances wrong?

This new NYTimes article (below) is quite an amazing story about the Queens machine, and how it is an apparently regular practice to nominate people to the county committee without their knowledge, even when there are insurgent challengers who are eager to serve but disqualified for technicalities (despite court orders saying they must be reinstated). Queens feels barely democratic sometimes.

An excerpt:

Quote
She had been nominated, without her knowledge, by the borough’s Democratic Party leadership, which is struggling to maintain control after the longtime Queens party chairman, Representative Joseph Crowley, was trounced by the left-leaning insurgent Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in a June Congressional primary that sent tremors through the Democratic establishment nationwide.

Ms. Gambichler is hardly alone.

The New York Times called dozens of the Queens party machine’s nominees for county committee. The candidates for 21 seats were running without their consent. Most of these candidates did not know they were running at all until a reporter told them.

it's definitely sleazy in that smoke-filled room way -- but i wonder if it's appreciably different than the machines in other boroughs or other towns in new york state, from Troy to Massena.

That article is about Astoria in case you wondered. Their paperwork was not in order.

It is not about the people on the ballot in Jackson Heights.

If Crowley gets re-elected, we have to keep fighting for independent people to represent this neighborhood. For months many of us gave their time and last week we won against his picks. We can't keep electing people who protect the luxury real estate lobby and then turn around and ask what happened to our city. He served for many years. Now resign with dignity.

Crowley will now continue to run Queens from his home in Virginia.
A guy who will hold no elected office and doesn’t even reside in the borough. Amazing!

Peralta is probably calling old Joe looking for another handout job. This IDC turncoat was handed his assembly seat by Joe.

In an article I read it mentioned that Monserrate wanted Gregory Meeks to be the head of the county party. Meeks was voted one of the most corrupt members of congress by CREW (Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington).

Guess that's not a surprise but, just kinda funny considering.

And apparently Mike Dendekker called Monserrate a criminal?

all those developer dollars essentially come from you. Such corrupt weaklings. The rules were written by politicians to make them richer. System is totally screwed unless we find a way for politicians to not care about money and to not measure things by money. I was just thinking about Domino Park in Williamsburg. I really feel like these things are built BECAUSE they cost a lot of money. The more people are greased, the easier it is for it to happen. They can't just keep it simple like in Flushing Meadow Park - that's why they need a stadium. They can't justify doing something for good and not for money. Sorry about the rant but I'm out of the country and it's ridiculous how broken NYC is. I really don't understand how it is worth it.

Can I run for something solely based on that I'm not a corrupt POS and will live entirely on the disclosed income?
