Wow, I read the article and thought the exact same thing.  Unfortunately, the title of this post sums the NYT article to a tee!  Great Job!

Don't worry - the Celery Stalk of Oppression and Tomato Juice of Tyranny will sort all of this out - soon.

Why are people so big on brunch these days? Is it the drinking?

Why are we making fun of them for that comment?  I see the same thing written here all the time and people wrote joyful comments when they realized El Rinco Tinto was serving brunch.  They seem like very normal people who chose JH for the same reasons as many as us.

amsci, what do you mean?  Brunch has been a "thing" since the early 90s.

Vilifying them for wanting something many other people have expressed a desire for on this board is extremely mean spirited. Good for them for being so young and wanting to put down some roots. And good for us that they found Jackson Heights as charming as (I hope) all of us and chose to invest here. I wish I had enough focus and drive to know what I wanted at 25 years old. It would have saved me a few hundred thousand dollars on my apartment purchase.

I think the true gem of the article was this line:

“Nothing is in English, and I kind of feel like I am on vacation.”

Yes, I understand that brunch is not a new concept. I know it's anecdata as best, but I noticed I've been reading/hearing more about brunch spots, people obsessing about brunch plans, etc. Not necessarily here, just in general, so I was curious.

I'm with Ms. Jackson on this.  There's really no need to be so snarky about the whole thing.  They love our neighborhood.  We love our neighborhood.  There are a few things they'd like to see added or changed and I'm sure everyone on here feels the same.  Personally, I don't care that much about a brunch spot--hey, I could eat breakfast at Rico Tinto every day and be very happy--but I'd certainly like to see another neighborhood bar or 2.  Anyway, I'm sure the subjects of the article will have a blast discovering all of the joys of Jackson Heights.  Welcome!

Read this article on my iPad this morning and the brunch spot comment was the thing that stood out to me as well. And yes, I agree with the other commenters here that find it mean-spirited to be calling them out for that.

Truth is, not only do we lack good places for a brunch, but JH is also sorely lacking (ironically) in places with a rear garden or open air seating. Woodside, Sunnyside, and Astoria have boundless options in this regard. I just wish there were some local spots that I could get together and have a relaxing brunch with friends on a Saturday or Sunday...

and YES, bloody marys and mimosas ARE an important part of the brunch experience!   ;)

Totally agree with StevenGrey.  Places on Northern are starting to have more places with back gardens including Bocaito and Juanitas.  So there is hope!

I mock those people on the board, too. I am internally consistent.

But these are snark infested waters!
