I wouldn't be surprised to find out that a good part of the members from that site are your run of the mill, everyday kids just doing what they deem to be cool.

I agree, there are a lot of wannabees out there.

They should only read something written by Tookie Roberts during his 20 years on death row before Arnie pulled the switch.  Lots of kids think being in a gang or going to prison is going to be a better lifestyle than what they're around. Some of them have little or no identity and apparently gangs and gang-speak give them this. I'm not so shocked by that website though.

Who's Tookie Roberts?

Or perhaps you're referring to Tookie Williams?

As for "Arnie pulling the switch", the relatives of Albert Lewis Owens, Yen-Yi Yang, Tsai-Shai Lin, and Yee-Chen Lin have nothing but memories and tombstones now, thanks to this loser......

Sorry, got the name wrong.
Also calm down,  I am not debating the issue of whether or not they should've killed him, just making a comment about his appeal for a stay of execution.  That's what I dislike about these type of forums, people misinterpret the reader's intent and go on the attack. However, it was interesting that a few celebs (not counting Snoop dog-former gang member) fought for him.

However, I must say, loser or not, he did write some compelling info on what it's like in prison and stupid kids are to think that getting involved in a gang is. Even if he's not someone to emulate or look up to, he did, in my opinion, write some pretty powerful words. Stuff that goes on in prison is worse than I had even imagined, and i've heard some personal stories. One of my co-workers (also a former gang member), has given me the lowdown.

No worries, I am quite calm actually, in a peaceful, detached, Zen like manner.

Recreational reading by American youth is at pitiful levels, irregardless of racial/socioeconomic status, etc. etc.  The kind of kids who are most at risk for gang activity and would most likely be persuaded by Williams' words probably don't read a whole lot of books to begin with, even if it's required in school.

Actually, here's the covers of two of his books:

There's something a bit odd about the marketing of those two books, perhaps a little irrelevant.......I can't quite place it.......let me ponder it and report back to the forum what that is when I figure it out.......

Most of today's gangs are mostly a bunch of disorganized kids trying to act tough.  I remember growing up in Aldus Ave and Southern Blvd over 20 years ago.  I remember the gangs then, they were tough and heartless.   My mom made sure we were busy after school to avoid all the elements that drive a young person into joining a gang.  The random killings back then where bad, even the Mafia had to cease some activities in many areas due to the aggressive nature of these gang members...these bastards just didn't fear them.  These gangs were organized, they were just a byproduct of the ghettos.

The homicides...children getting shot, seniors getting killed, heck I even remember stories about cops getting killed and disappearing.  The 70's, 80's and 90's were a time that I will never forget.  I came to NYC from a town name Van Scoy in Bayamon PR.  When we arrived to my fathers place in Newkirk Ave in the late 70's the first thing my father did was asked me if I knew how to fight.  I didn't, I didn't have to where I came from.  So, my father taught my brother and myself how to fight.  My mother didn't approve but didn't want to rock the boat.  Everyday there was a group of Haitians and Jamaicans playing soccer in the street.

Once in a while some Latin guys came around with broom sticks and dressed in black pants and shirts and in winter they all used leather jackets.  Whenever the guys playing soccer saw them coming they would simply pack up and leave quietly.  Then the latins would simply start playing stick ball.  I wondered why soccer guys would simply walk away.  I asked my dad if there was some sort of schedule for the soccer and then the stick ball players (I was 8 or 9 years old).  My father looked at me and I had to explain to him what happened and then he told me that the leather jacket guys were a gang.  He also said he knew most of the kids in the gang and that at one time they were victimized by other groups.

Little by little these guys became united and protected each other but later what started like a small group of Puerto Ricans protecting themselves from other ethnicity (Italian gangs, black gangs) ended up being the most feared gang in the area.  I didn't ever see these guys do anything bad, just play handball and stick ball.  Two years later my mom leaves my dad and we end up in the South Bronx.  Man, what a different world it was.  The bad guys here were BADDDD.  Ruthless and they didn't hide from cops.

My mom signed us up to take Karate and boxing and she made sure we went...lol  I saw how the police would avoid driving by my block.  If someone called the cops there would be 5 police cars answering the call...even if it was to answer a BS complant.  I can go on and on the subject.  I guess my point is that there is way too much anti-gang activity in NYC that it is controlled sufficiently that the quality of life in the Jackson Hts area should suffer minimally or non at all and most people in NYC are not effected. While on occasion immigrant communities will be exposed to gangs, the ones that must deal with it most are those in lower income communities.

That's true, even his books are easy reading. Well, if it can help at least one person. I think the marketing is probably odd because the product was was written by a convicted killer. There may have been some controversy about publishing it, making a killer a celebrity. Oddly enough, seems that's what it did.

Funny, I think I read more books as a kid than I do now. Probably has a lot to do with the internet.

From 12th paragraph in link: http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local/queens/2008/07/11/2008-07-11_arrest_made_in_shocking_revenge_slay_of_-3.html

Carlos Rios, 17, had been walking along Northern Blvd. in East Elmhurst when he was stabbed several times in the stomach after his assailant thought the teen was staring at him, police said.

Rios died at Elmhurst Hospital Center shortly after the 5:30 p.m. Thursday assault. Jose Fuentes, 22, a suspected member of a Honduran street gang, was charged with murder and weapons possession, police said.

Reminds me of a story that I read in the paper back in the late 80's,some kid shot another kid on a subway because he was being stared at,in his words.."He was woofing me,so I shot him."

Read this Book...really amazing and a true story.

This guy invented the "half way houses" - Wall Street Journal raved about it.  I read it, a sad time in NY history and a happy ending (well, sort of)

Movie being made as well
