also, a distillery from Cooperstown with bourbon, whiskey, gin and samples  ;D

The gin was great too! And buckwheat flour from the grain people and even Gewurztraminer grapes!  The market was just amazingly overflowing with goodies today.

And start another topic if you want jump on defenseless dogs when the topic had nothing to do with it. It's about ownership not breed.

The Hawthorne Valley maple vanilla yogurt is really delicious! I wish I had bought more than 2.

Anyone have a helpful hint for keeping track of apple varieties? I know Stayman Winesap is one of my favorites. Today the orchard had several new varieties I hadn't heard of. I asked the farm owner about taste, etc. and I selected a few new ones to try. Only problem is when I get them home I have no idea which is which.

Perhaps separate bags?  (Bring a little notepad so that you can mark which is which when purchasing.)

I can't believe how delicious the Ambrosia apples are.  Out of this world!!!

I'll try that next week if I can remember to bring separate bags. I don't feel right taking a large plastic bag for each apple variety that I choose. Sometimes I am buying at least 5 different ones!

I also sampled those fine gin, and bought a bottle. It will be nice if we have a few rotating vendors. I talked to the grain lady too, she said they will be here once a month and introduce different distillery each time.

Take a photo of each variety of apple with the sign labeling it in the picture?

Good idea. I'll try that if I forget the extra little bags.

In case anyone's wondering, despite the forecast of heavy rain later in the day today, 10/29/17, the greenmarket is mostly operational. There do seem to be a few stands missing, like the large produce stand that usually sets up on the corner of 78th. Hawthorne Valley is next to that spot today, which is not their usual spot. The apple orchard is missing but you can still get apples at the other place further down 78th. I think there are one or two other stands missing as well.

I haven't been able to find eggs at the greenmarket for the past few weeks, and I'm wondering if I'm getting there too late or if they just haven't been available? Haven't seen Tellos in awhile, Sawkill normally has eggs in addition to meat but they usually sell out early. However I was more prompt than usual this morning (pre 10 AM) and Sawkill didn't have them + still no Tellos. Is this a seasonal thing? Would love to hear if others have a farm-to-table egg source in the neighborhood that I'm missing...
thanks!

Does anyone know if Hawthorne Valley Farm is at the greenmarket today, 1/14/18? The temps are quite cold again and last week they were not there, presumably due to the extreme cold.

Yes, birds don't breed during winter, they breed towards spring. So all of those little biological details that go into the breeding process are put on hiatus.

They do have pasture raised, humane certified eggs at Downtown Natural Market. Brought to us from farms in warmer climes and longer breeding seasons, but with the added carbon footprint of being trucked to the Winterlands.

Madura, although you'd never know that, since he does not put up a canopy. just look for the mushrooms -- he's the only vendor to have them

I think it's about timing re: eggs. They tend to run out early but I am usually successful when I get there before 9am.

third Sunday of each month. picked up a couple bags of beans today. they do something i really like -- put the packing/milling date on each bag. both the beans and flour i bought were prepared less than ten days ago, which i appreciate.
fwiw, the owner/manager at American Seafood can rattle off catch dates, too, and let you know if you have one, two or more days of wiggle room in storing stuff in the fridge.

I'm not sure if our greenmarket will be affected by this, but I could imagine that if SNAP benefits are not accepted, sales might go way down, and fewer people will be able to access the greenmarket food.

it'll be horrible for consumers and farmers, but the so-called "blue apron" boxes the so-called president wants to send out in lieu of fresh food availability will certainly help unload warehouses full of expired canned goods.

I picked up a couple of Heirloom tomatoes at the greenmarket today. Hoping to match the flavor of some tomatoes I recently ate in a Greek salad at the fairly new restaurant Akrotiri in Astoria.  :)

It’s slim pickings at the greenmarket today. There are no produce stands, no apples. There is a bakery, grains, fish, pork/meat, turkey and eggs. Also compost and textiles.

Thanks, Shelby. There wasn't too much when I went last weekend either, but there were at least apples. I was just thinking about heading over, but I may now reconsider.

The Queens Greenmarkets page on FB will let you know what vendors are coming when weather events occur.  I checked it out to make sure my favorite bakery was going to make it in before heading out on Sunday since I figured a lot of vendors might not be planning to come.

I've been looking for the stand that sells unusual greens and haven't seen it in a while. I thought maybe it would be back today with the nicer weather. Does this stand usually disappear all winter, and if so, when does it return?

Don't think we've reached the growing season quite yet and it's still operating on the winter schedule. Are your farmers on this list?

I can’t recall  the name of the farm. I thought they also carried other items besides greens, but maybe I’m misremembering.

I think im-- though I am not certain -- it is Lani's farm that has all the interesting greens (among other things). They are there growing season only.

Thanks. Since I hate the hot, humid weather, I don't want to rush things along so I don't mind waiting patiently.  ;)

Lani's has returned. with some new pre-made items in addition to the produce. they'd been selling sauces and kimchis, but this season has brought a few cooked dishes as well. picked up some kimchi pancakes that were very good and bright tasting.

and Lost Bread Company, the new vendor mentioned here the other day, is on hand. samples of everything that's available. picked up a seeded rye, which feels very hearty, and a couple of pretzel batons. just about all savory, with one or two kinds of cookies for sale (the oversized kind).

I saw those pancakes and was tempted, but I ended up buying the product next to them instead, which was a mung bean sprout spinach salad with sesame seeds, sesame oil and salt as the dressing.
