Title: Lety's Bakery & Cafe
Post by: Chuckster on April 18, 2008, 10:01:09 PM
I stopped by Lety's tonight and noticed that they're now selling gelato, $2.00 a small cup.  Flavors are vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, mango and coffee.  I tried the strawberry and thought it had a nice flavor...will definitely try the others.  It's nice to have this option during the warm weather months, especially now that Baskin Robbins is no longer around.  Good for those days when you feel like indulging a little. ;)

I love gelato.  It would be great not to have to drive over to Ditmars to get my fix.  Yesterday I walked over to yofiore to try their coffee or pomegranite yogurt but they didn't have either flavor so I just walked over to Yogurtberry and got their plain with three berry topping.  It was delicious.  Don't ask me why I didn't stay and try the plain at yofiore but I didn't.

A friend recently told me that Lety's now sells bagels during breakfast hours.  Can anyone confirm this?

Our favorite treats from Lety's are the dark chocolate rum balls and the mini raspberry and blueberry fruit tarts.

It would be great if Lety's also started serving sandwiches and soups.

I heard that the baker here had experience before at Veniero's in NYC.  We just ordered a Pastiera (a typical Italian wheat pie eaten at Easter) and the price was HALF of what they charge in Manhattan.  Everything we have purchased at Lety's has been excellent.  I am so happy they are here in JH.

I like their chocolate rum balls (do they really have rum in them?!), rainbow cakes, and plain cheesecake.  Their cheesecake is now my favorite of all cheesecakes.  Silly me, I used to like Juniors until I realized how much better it can get!

There is now a Lety Bakery Cafe 2 in Woodside
http://sunnysidepost.com/2012/12/18/italian-bakery-on-skillman-avenue-opens/

An Italian bakery opened earlier this month at 51-18 Skillman Ave., the former home of Olympica Bakery and Restaurant. The new bakery, called Lety Bakery Cafe II, is the second store that owner Leticia Herera has established. She is selling cannolis, tiramisu, napoleons and Italian cheesecakes– all baked on the premises. Breakfast service starts at 6 am and there is plenty of seating.

Herera’s other bakery is in Jackson Heights—which has received rave reviews in the six years it has been open. Spurred on by her success, she decided to open another in Woodside. “I checked the town and it didn’t have an Italian bakery,” she said. One block west of Herera’s new bakery is La Marjolaine (50-17 Skillman Ave,) the French bakery that has been in business for 62 years. La Marjolaine owner Krim Debeh is aware of Lety Bakery and said: “Competition is good for everyone, besides everyone has a different way of baking.” Meanwhile, Herera, said, “They’re French, we’re Italian…It’s very different.”

I stumbled upon Lety's while doing some research on food in Jackson Heights last spring and loved it! I went in once and asked them to add their gelato to coffee and they did it - it was yum. Their raisin roll is really tasty - heck, everything I've had there is tasty! I'll have to check out the Sunnyside location - thanks for the tip.

I've eaten at Lety's in Woodside several times now. They are serving breakfast and lunch with service that seems to stop at 7-8p, so not full dinner yet. Prices are very reasonable (i.e. Omelet platter w/ home fries and coffee was $5).
They still don't have menu's and seem to still be getting their act together on what they will offer on a consistent basis.

Each year around Christmas I look for the Italian Fig Ccokies, I think they are called Cucidati.  They have them at Lety’s and they are particularly delicious.

Lety's is quite good. I like their S cookie (without the chocolate dip). It's an almond cookie, technically an old-school macaron, before they were manufactured by machine in all those hideous colors. Letys' just needs a teeny bit more paste to be perfect. But that stuff is expensive, so I don't expect it to be old-fashion moisty-chewy.

What’s happening at Letys? Major gut renovation?

Yes! I actually talked to her this weekend and they're closing for about 2 weeks to renovate. I asked what they were doing and she said "everything."

Excited for her and to see the new space when it's done!

Wow, I saw the demo going on inside this afternoon and feared the worst. Glad it's only a renovation project and hope their contractor sticks to the schedule.

I hope they don't feel the need to compete with the new guys up the avenue...I've been going to lety's since they opened, and while they don't make world class pastry, it's the quintessential New York bakery, the kind you don't see too much any more. I love the cannolis and we always get kids b-day cakes here. More than anything though, I hope they aren't planning on kicking out the old timers and neighborhood kids who park in their seats. The fact that it's a neighborhood rest-stop is the greatest service they provide, and I know conventional wisdom says that being too lenient in this way is bad business, I'd argue that it's the only reason this pace has sustained itself all these years.

Lety's Italian cheesecake is excellent and a rare find nowadays. The traditional macarons (her S-shaped cookies are gooey delicious almond paste which was the macaron before someone decided to color them, shape them by machine, and sell them in a box for a ridiculous price) are superb. Her cappuccino is only 2-something and is served in a glass mug.

I find the pretty stuff at fancier places is often too sweet for me. Sugar does not make pastries better.

Love Lety's.

Just wondering if anyone knows anything about Lety's Bakery and Cafe, on 37th Ave, being closed.  It says for renovation. We frequent them fairly regularly, but had no idea this was going to happen.

It's closed for renovations, as you can see in some of above post replies.

Thanks for merging my question into this thread.  I missed it when I looked.

My husband and I love Lety's and we're happy to hear this is only a reno. Their cheesecakes and regular cakes are wonderful and I often stop for coffee.  When we got married in February we had a celebration in our home and we bought three different cakes there...and all were hits with our guests! Sure, we've been going to Farine for Key lime tarts and baguettes, but we weren't buying those at Lety's anyway.

Farine?! I don't pay $6.50 for pastry in Manhattan... so I'm certainly not going to in JH.

Lety is fantastic, good to see they are remodeling. I still haven't been to Farine yet as the last time I asked they said they couldn't guarantee nut allergy safety due to them not having the kitchen set up properly for it yet.

So I just passed by Lety's this afternoon and the doorway was opened wide enough to get a look inside. Seems like there's still quite a bit of work to do before they are ready to reopen, so I'm guessing at least another week? Anyone heard anything different?

on Tuesday, the construction worker i spoke to said another two weeks. that seems reasonable. the original time frame seemed way too ambitious.

I passed by last night and the paper was off the windows and a passerby said they had been open earlier in the day (Sunday). I'll stroll by today and report back. I've really missed them!!!

I passed by quickly yesterday and also noticed that there were a few people seated. I didn’t have time to stop in, though.

dropped in as well. they had our go-to items, and the young woman behind the counter was bringing out more stuff at quite a clip. the in-case items are mostly there, cookies sparse. the space looks great, much airier.
