Can't wait to see what they do with the place. The owner posted some pics of the pre-renovation interior on another thread here http://www.jacksonheightslife.com/community/index.php?topic=10200.msg59653#msg59653

Does anyone know what's happening with this restaurant and when it will open?
Really looking forward to when it opens, and checking out their food.
But I signed up for e-mails on progress but haven't received any.
So where's it at?
Cheers
-
Hi! Thanks for the interest.
We've been working away on the design-side of things while permit issues are getting sorted out. Things are complicated, but we're working them out. We don't have an estimated opening date yet, hopefully soon we'll be able to know roughly when that will be, and then we'll start posting news, updates and announcements. Right now there's nothing exciting to share, unless you're interested in learning about Alteration Type I permits and such ;D
-
You have a great space, but I imagine that changing it to a restaurant involves a certain amount of aggravating, infuriating, mind-numbing, time-consuming red tape :)
Looking forward to your opening.
-
Any news? Other than type I permits.
-
Have we figured out what's going on with this restaurant? Disappointed that nothing has happened yet because it sounded so nice on paper! Anyone have any news?
-
Usual request for an update. Dudley or anyone else with first-hand knowledge, can you give us an update?
Usually no activity and no news - for months - is bad news. I hope for the neighborhood's sake that I'm wrong.
-
I think its smart to keep quiet, especially in NYC as there are always delays and hicups.
-
Today I noticed the gate was partially up so I looked through the window. Other than being gutted, there's no indication what the space will become.
-
Dudley, Can the Jackson Heights community still look forward to the opening of the Queensboro or should we just give up on it not happening.
Please respond either way, thanks.
-
I'm sure they won't forget Jackson Heights Life when they have some news to announce.
-

Not a good sign.
-
Something is going on in that space. I walked by and there were people inside, and I saw strings of lights hanging from the ceiling--like decorative lights not utility lights, which looked odd because the space is empty and raw.
-
It would make a good spot for a pop up rave. Better than the one planned on Halloween at a well documented Superfund site in Greenpoint.
-
Through the grapevine, I've heard from a reliable source that Tony, who is slated to be a chef at The Queensboro, has left his current gig as chef at Marios Pizza to focus his energies on The Queensboro while they work on preparing the eatery to open.
So glad to hear that things are back on track!
Now i have to wonder, which new american restaurant will open first? Secondly, which one will be serving me a tasty bloody mary with brunch??
-
I don't see any evidence that anything is happening at that storefront. In fact, there's a "stores for rent" sign posted on the 80th St side of the building. Perhaps the venture was defeated by all the difficulties. How can anyone afford to rent space and wait endlessly for all these permits and approvals?

How did Emoji Burger seemingly open so fast.. as well as Caffe Bene?
-
Well, for one thing, they didn't apply for a liquor license.
-
Well, for one thing, they didn't apply for a liquor license.
True, is that the reason though?
The Okawa between 77th and 78th on 37th sells beer and wine. They opened not too long ago. Wonder if we asked them if they had a problem getting a license what they would say.
-
Selling wine and beer seems to requires a different license than liquor. My understanding is it's easier to get than a liquor license. So a place that wants to forgo a bar and mixed drinks will have an easier time of it.
-
Walked by the site today and saw lights on and new windows installed. At last, some action! We wish the long-suffering proprietor all the best in getting this place open.
-
Amen!
-
What is the Queensboro?
-
Hopefully..... An American Bistro. It's been in the planning stages for quite some time so don't know if it's actually going to open.
-
http://thequeensboro.com/
their website now no longer says "opening 2015", and has copyright 2016 on the bottom.
Anyone in the know give us an update?
-
I walked past this weekend, and new shutters were there, as well as a dumpster containing lots of building residue. Does anyone close to dudley et al have any info?
-
I've been wondering about this place myself for a while now. I walked passed it today and saw some serious construction going on. The gates were not open, they work with the gates closed. This place was huge inside. I asked the contractor what are you guys building? He told me " a bar and bistro, it should be open in about three months " Now we know for sure that it's coming so we can all relax now lol..
-
Updates?
-
Anyone have any updates?
-
No updates from me, but....my speculation is that the construction shed that's on the 80th street side is hiding a bank of windows in what used to be a solid brick wall.
-
dudleeeeeeeeeeeeey! tell us what is happeniiiiiiiiing!
please
-
The lack of of updates is a missed opportunity to begin building a loyal customer base. PLEASE TELL US WHAT IS GOING ON.......can't you tell there is so much pent up demand for a decent place to eat in this neighborhood that we actually want to sit in and spend time in?..... we want to be able to get behind you and build the hype for your grand opening.......just sayin

I'm as eager as the next person to learn more about this project. But I certainly understand their preference to proceed with their work quietly and privately until they have news to share.
We've seen two models of communication by new restaurants under development in our neighborhood. One has shared with us every step of the process, including detailed design choices, struggles with permitting, etc. This has included a fair bit of drama when there have been disagreements with members of this discussion forum and criticism of the community board. The other restaurant has been more measured in its communications, reliably showing up here to update us when they have tangible news to share. But given that they have missed their opening date as well, I'm sure they've been traveling a similarly difficult road. In the end, despite being led by people who know what they are doing, both are taking a lot longer to come to life than anticipated. The obstacles to opening a business in this city are clearly very high.
Nonetheless, the neighborhood is rooting for them, and they'll both be welcomed eagerly when they finally do open up. I'm sure they'll welcome any word-of-mouth publicity we can provide when they're ready for it.
-
The previous post is right on. As a former cafe owner I learned the hard way not to share too much info before you're ready. City permits can delay you at the last minute, as can cash crunches. When you tell people about an opening that then doesn't happen, you lose credibility. All news has to be carefully parsed out.

To be fair, the over-communication you're referencing went to the point of disparaging comments towards other food establishments in the neighborhood. The dirty laundry of the road to open-date is interesting to witness, but I'd say the one you're referencing went far above that and strayed off that topic quite often.

O wise and beneficent gods of the bistro: Bacchus, Dionysus and Amex, we praise thee!
Bringers of Brunch
Masters of Mimosae
Benefactors of Bordeaux
Searers of Steak
Potentates of Pudding
We implore you! Give us a sign!
-
Alas, your plaintive cries have gone unanswered three times. I think it's safe to assume that whatever the status of this bistro/gastropub is, the developers are not reading or responding to the JHL board.
-
I happened to walk by a few weeks ago and was able to see inside. I confirmed that there has been no work done on the space for several months. However, based on what has already completed, it has real potential with an open kitchen and a large bar area. If it ever gets completed it has the potential to be a neighborhood changing restaurant. So if the developers are reading this, I hope you find the money to keep going!
-
I think most people have more or less given up on this.

according to his profile, it's been over a year since Dudley has been "active" on the board in any way -- not that he needs to keep anyone apprised of his doings, but for a once-regular poster to disappear entirely doesn't bode well for the venture. just hope nothing serious has happened.

a woman i know, albeit not all that well, lives in the Towers. she told me last week that the gentlemen behind this place have thrown in the towel after running out of cash. can't verify that beyond the shadow of a doubt, but nearly a year with no progress indicates something is wrong.
-
I heard from someone yesterday that they saw construction activity starting again. Maybe the project has been resurrected or someone new has taken over. Fingers crossed that the original idea will be realized.
-
Doors were open today and construction taking place inside. Anybody with insights as to what's happening?
-
No insights, but construction continues and the bar area seems to be coming together. Who knows, maybe eggs Benedict and bellinis ARE on the horizon!
On a related note, Addictive Wine and Tapas is a bit farther along (having started only this last January) and looks to be shooting for a July opening.

Shelby2 - it's on the northwest corner of Northern and 87th. There was a bodega in the space before. The current location is going to be turned into a craft beer and cider place, with small plates and banh mi....

Thanks. That sounds great. One thing we can count on is that Francisco and Patrick will create an amazing interior. They did a fantastic job with the tapas place.

Here is something that puzzles me. When the heated discussions about gentrification get going--especially in regards to projects like The Queensboro and Swim Two Birds--there are always people who say that JH is a neighborhood of struggling immigrants and cannot support more upscale restaurants for that reason. And we should not expect--or want-- that fact to change. We are a neighborhood that showcases inexpensive cuisines from the many cultures represented here. Get over it--go to Manhattan or Brooklyn or okay, LIC if you want bistros and wine bars and craft cocktails, etc.
Well, we had dinner Saturday night at Uncle Peter's on Northern, where we noticed the top entree price is now something like $46. The place is has been a fixture here for a long time and is busy whenever we've been there. So how can Uncle Peter's survive here if nobody can afford to eat in a place like that? And it's not the only local restaurant that can be quite pricey. So I don't buy that argument that all JH can support based on "what the market wants" is 99 cent stores and budget-priced restaurants. There are plenty of people here from all over the world who frequent these pricey restaurants and bring their whole family--I've seen large groups eating at places that were far from cheap, where I might hesitate to bring a gaggle of kids along with the grownups for that reason. Thoughts?
-
I think Uncle Peter's owns the building.
However, it is always crowded so the prices don't seem to be keeping people away.

Rent is a big deal.
Getting a NEW liquor license is a big deal.
Also, Uncle Peter's has an established clientele, it doesn't have to prove itself.
Armando's was the same way.

I've never seen Jackson Heights as a neighborhood of "struggling immigrants." The more recent immigrants who came to this neighborhood were always solidly middle class--teachers, accountants--just as the original wave of Irish, Jewish and Italians were. The large number of coops and private homes assured that. As with any community, there were, and are, people who are less fortunate mixed in, but this neighborhood has always hovered at around the same economic level regardless of the ethnic background of the residents.
The neighborhood has also always supported a mix of inexpensive and more upscale restaurants and I think it still can. Dinner for two at Uncles Peter's, Armondo's, the late Luigi's and Trieste could easily surpass $100 with drinks. If Swim Two Birds or The Queensboro open and the average cost per couple is $180-200, then, no, I don't think they will make it. But if the food and service are good, and the prices are similar to let's say Armondo's, then I think they have a good chance.

Who told you this? Will this new beer/cider bar be run by the folks from Addictive? Would be great to have a place like that in the neighborhood.

Patrick did, and it's the same folks, Patrick and Francisco!

Saw the doors open at The Queensboro and had a chat. They're working hard on getting the place up and running.

Where exactly will the Queensboro be?
-
80-02 Northern Blvd -- formerly a carpet store.

(Obviously they didn't keep up with updating the tumblr page but at least you can see what the space looked like at one point.)
-
I just walked past the Queensboro and peeked through the open back door. The chef Tony saw us and was kind enough to give us a quick tour. What a TERRIFIC space. Lots of work happening so I couldn't see the finished detail but it's a large space with a big bar and open kitchen.
Opening sometime July I think.
Very excited.
-
This is really really exciting. The size of the space could be a liability if they can't keep it in use. Hopefully they have a decently affordable rent.

Where's that child's hardhat?! Hahaha. It's great to see things are actually moving forward. Eager to know what the final product will look like. Judging by the size (and the state of construction in that photo), probably looking at something in the Fall, at best. Nevertheless, really exciting!
-
This is too much good news, I am not sure if I can handle it :). This and Stew's restaurant. And seem like Brunson building is making progress too.
-
Some light investigative work has revealed to me their architect, who has additional photos on their instagram account:
Copper clad bar: https://www.instagram.com/p/BR9CmB4B3MM/
Brick-framed window openings: https://www.instagram.com/p/BUR6bnxFvEX/
There are others, but they're really old (over a year old). These were the most recent.
-
walked by there today. so excited!
-
I walked by on Saturday and saw the door open. I popped my head in and had a quick chat to one of the owners. It looks GREAT! Renovations are pretty much done and he is waiting on some final permits. Hopeful of having them in a month.
-
Great news that they're so close! Finally!
-
We are just as excited! Can't wait til they open. They are such a support for us. We cant wait to shiw some love!
Great news that they're so close! Finally!

Anyone heard anything about an opening date?
-
"soon," as of spring 2016.
-
I noticed that they have started advertising on FB, but nothing about an opening on the FB page or their website. Shame they don't offer any updates. I for one am still hoping for a great new addition to the neighborhood.
-
i was making visits to InstaMed on Northern in the early fall and i did notice work going on, with doors open.

Congratulations and good luck, guys! Great to see everybody enjoying the space!
