I grew up in Jackson Heights from 1950. Went to St Joan of Arc. I remember when the church was just one level and it was what is now called the lower church. The upper church was completed arouund 1952 and Father Boylan was the pastor.  Across from St Joans on the north west side of 35th ave between 82nd and 83rd was a park with lots of grass and benches.                                                                 Fields was the best store in the neighborhood. Across from Fields on 82 St was a
liquor store, a beauty parlor, a tuxedo rental store, a candy store and Florshine shoes was on the corner.  Across 37th ave was Baracini chocolate shop on one corner and Moss's drug store with a great soda fountain on the other corner.      Where IS 145 is now there were tennis courts.
The neighborhood has changed so much, somehow it's a shame

Reading the posts made me think back to when my friends use to travel to visit me just to go shopping at Bang Bang on 82nd Street and then go eat Cuban-Chinese food at El Dorado.

Stores come and go ... but few stores leave a memory.

A bit late on the reply, but here goes...  Bang Bang Boutique on 82nd Street! I remember that shop.  I know it closed, but can't recall how long ago that was.  It's been replaced by another clothing store.  I just passed by El Dorado's locale recently, also recalling going for some Chino Cubano food, particularly el bistec encebollado.  Good times!   8)  Come to think of it, we  don't have many of these types of restaurants in the neighborhood.  There are plenty of Hispanic restaurants with similar offerings, but that Cuban Chinese combination is elusive.

I thought it was Mollie and Ollie's store.  What years did you live here?

Anybody here used to drink in The Golden Note? It was a classic bar on the corner of 75th Street and 37th Ave.

I used to hang out in the Golden Note in the '60s

Lived in the Heights from 1950. Remember Woolworths very well and also remember Kresge's 5 and 10 across the street. On the corner of 82nd st was Fields and across was Moss's drug store. Thom McAn shoe store was also across from Fields. I remember Schrafft's on 82nd st and Marie Sheridan's, which was the first place I ever worked.

--we lived in the apartment below Dave Goldstein. Remember the empty store next door in which he kept his empty bottles? Never worked for him, but I did 'run drugs' for Meyer Banchefsky, Terrace Towers Pharmacy. He was a great influence on me, and I earned enough to buy a Heathkit tape recorder.

Meyer and Rose Banchefsky's daughter, Evelyn, is my mom. I shared your post and memories with her and she loved hearing it. She'd like to know if her father's pharmacy is still there and what occupies it now, if anyone can answer. If anyone has any other memories of them, please post it!!  :)

I used to drink in the Golden Note when it had the nickname bucket of blood. Early 60's. Hung out with the crowd that called it home]

Had another kid who grew up in Jackson Heights put me onto this site. I'll start off with the "twin thing" as my brother Dick and I did so much stuff together back in the day.

Where: both 37-05 79th and 37-06 80th.
School: SJA (on the white shirt), 8th grade mixed (there was an all boys class), 1956
Hangouts: lots of sports at the PS69 schoolyard.  Even played hardball in the grassy lots next to the post office until hitting the ball onto 37th avenue became too easy. Went away to school in 1960 so never really got into the Budd's (regular) crowd.
Name dropping:  (PS69 regulars) the legendary, ageless Bob Polachek, Bert Lowenstein, Richie and Bobby Rubino, Charlie Berry, Steve Feldstein, Demarco, Egrie, Sid and Dave Daniels, Alec Myers, Neubauer, Allen, the Brigands (Buster CEO), Chester Lumish.......

Yes, there was.  It had the corner space now occupied by The Makeup Shop.  The shoe repair place closed because the owner retired.

Shoe shine booths were in the rear of the store.  As a kid, amazed at how many shoe nails the cobbler could hold in his mouth at one time while hammering in new heels. Front of shop had a hat steaming machine.  Castlewood Mkt next door with one of those delivery bicycles with the huge basket in front and the smaller front wheel.
