New street crossing assist signals
« on: May 22, 2018, 09:16:21 PM »
There are at least three new street crossing assist signals installed at 78th Street and 37th Avenue. I thought these were a thing of the past, but perhaps they're there to assist school kids. I'm wondering how many people will have the patience to push the button before crossing.

It's likely that these do not actually control the traffic signals, which will remain on a fixed cycle.  Instead, they may be intended to give visually impaired pedestrians an audible signal so they know when it is safe to cross.

That makes sense. The one in the photo is installed at the corner of Lemon Tree, pointing across 78th Street toward the bank.  At first glance, it just seemed too close of a distance for a traditional signal. I assume they'll be installing more throughout 37th Ave.
